The Toby Edmonds-trained Silva ‘N’ Suave was an ultra-impressive debut winner for his first-season sire D’Argento at the Gold Coast on the polytrack.
Too Darn Hot is just that
Just a week after siring his first Southern Hemisphere stakes winner with Broadsiding, Darley’s Too Darn Hot (GB) made headlines again on Saturday.
Broadsiding flew through the mud to secure the G1 Champagne S. and his promising son Perspiration secured victory in the Mornington Guineas, marking athe son of Dubawi’s (GB) eighth individual winner in Australasia.
The James Cummings-trained Broadsiding was on the seven-day back-up, having claimed the Listed Fernhill H. his rider James McDonald warned at the time the son of Too Darn Hot was a serious colt in the making.
On Saturday, he more than proved that assessment correct. Despite the testing conditions, Broadsiding was strong to the line in the time-honoured mile event. The race favourite, Linebacker (NZ) (Super Seth) was gallant in second, while Fearless (Pierata) courageously held third - securing a clean sweep for first-season stallions.
Speaking to Sky Racing after the success, Cummings said, “Broadsiding is a very interesting colt. He has continued to improve right the way through this preparation and that makes all the difference to 2-year-olds when you get to the major days.
“He’s got that beautiful European blood to assure he had the stamina to win a Fernhill and a Champagne. Broadsiding has managed to stamp himself as quite a horse to follow in the spring.”
“He’s (Broadsiding's) got that beautiful European blood to assure he had the stamina to win a Fernhill and a Champagne. Broadsiding has managed to stamp himself as quite a horse to follow in the spring.” - James Cummings
Broadsiding is the third and final foal from the Street Cry (Ire) mare Speedway. She won twice over the mile and is a half-sister to the talented Flit (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}), a victress of the G1 Thousand Guineas and the G2 Light Fingers S.
The son of Too Darn Hot is also from the family of the dual Group 1 winner Tropical Squall (Prized Icon).
Broadsiding has the distinction of being the first Group 1 winner and first stakes winner in the Southern Hemisphere for his triple Group 1-winning sire.
Meanwhile, at Mornington the Ciaron Maher-trained Perspiration (Too Darn Hot {GB}) showed he was one to follow with a debut second at Randwick-Kensington in March and then a charging second at Caulfield last-start. On Saturday, he encountered no traffic troubles, with Ethan Brown in the saddle he ran out a comfortable victor from Snack Bar (Frosted {USA}) and Just For Show (Showtime).
Brown was impressed with the performance of Perspiration, telling Racing.com, “Perspiration found a lovely spot throughout the first half of the race and switched off. When the field hit the side part of the track they really slowed the tempo up and so I thought there’s no point sitting back here and pulling.
“I let him slide up and he really let go with a good turn of foot.”
Perspiration is the third foal from the Casino Prince mare Latitude. She won five races from 1000 to 1600 metres and is a half-sister to the talented Sugar Boom (Spirit Of Boom), a victress of the Listed Mode Plate.
The colt bred by G P Nolan and J A Nolen was withdrawn from the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale. Instead Rosari Farm presented Perspiration at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale where he sold for $270,000 to Ciaron Maher Bloodstock and Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA).
Too Darn Hot has sired eight individual winners in his debut Southern Hemisphere crop. He stood the 2023 breeding season for $44,000 (inc GST) at Darley, Kelvinside, where he covered 121 mares.
Bustling bursts clear Karrakatta Plate
The G2 Karrakatta Plate was a one-act affair with the Daniel Morton-trained Bustling (Frosted {USA}) streaking clear from Earthstorm (Calyx {GB}) and Blue Rocket (Blue Point {Ire}).
Bustling was bred by Oakland Park Stud and raced by that operation alongside C L Morton and N H MacDonald. He brings his record to three victories from four starts and was a last-start victor of the Listed Perth S.
The son of Frosted (USA) is the fourth foal from the Key Business mare Busimiss, who was placed in the Listed Supremacy S. and the Listed Gimcrack S. Bustling hails from the family of Pushin’ Shapes (Viscount), a victor of eight races from 1000 to 1900 metres, including the Listed Northam Cup.
Bustling is one of four stakes winners in the Southern Hemisphere for Darley’s former shuttler Frosted, a son of Tapit (USA). Frosted's final Australian-bred crop are yearlings.
Poem no problem for Ace
The Stephen Marsh-trained Love Poem (Snitzel) was all the rage in Saturday’s Listed Star Way S. at Ellerslie with bookmakers seemingly ignoring the prospects of the Team Rogerson-trained Domain Ace (NZ) (Swiss Ace) in the 2-year-old feature.
Love Poem looked set to fight the event out, when with bounding strides on the outside Domain Ace, ridden by Craig Grylls, claimed them all to secure victory. Love Poem held on for second, while Chicago Jack (All Too Hard) held third ahead of Dream Of The Moon (All Too Hard).
Domain Ace took his record to two from two. A smart winner on debut at Otaki by 1.3l over 1200 metres, the gelding dropped back to the 1000 metres of the Star Way S. with no issue. The son of Swiss Ace is from the unraced Hussonet (USA) mare Internet, who is a half-sister to Delago Deluxe, a son of Encosta De Lago. He was crowned the Champion 2-Year-Old Colt in South Africa, with four of his seven victories coming as a juvenile. Delago Deluxe won the G1 Scottsville Golden Horse Casino Sprint and the G1 Gold Medallion.
The gelding’s third dam, Staging (Success Express {USA}) won 10 races, including four Group 2 events. She proved a successful broodmare producing the G1 BTC Cup victor Duporth, Excites, who won the G1 Sires’ Produce S. and the G2 Pago Pago S. winner Tickets.
Domain Ace was a $35,000 purchase by Rogerson Bloodstock from the draft of Westbury Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale. He was re-offered by Rogerson Bloodstock through the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready To Run Sale but passed in short of his NZ$50,000 reserve.
The gelding is the 19th stakes winner for the Westbury Stud-based Swiss Ace, who stood the 2023 season at a fee of NZ$5000 (plus GST).
Yarraman Park Stud’s Brave Smash posted an impressive new winner with the Robert and Luke Price-trained Smashing Time breaking his maiden by 1l at Kembla Grange on Saturday.
Suave winner for D’Argento
The punters knew something when they sent the Toby Edmonds-trained Silva ‘N’ Suave (D’Argento) out as the $2 favourite in the second race at the Gold Coast on the polytrack.
Silva ‘N’ Suave, ridden by Jag Guthmann-Chester duly saluted by 3l over Thunderous (Night Of Thunder {Ire}, while the third-placed Mishani Hitman (Jet Spur) was a further 5.5l away.
The 2-year-old gelding is the eighth foal from the Viscount mare My Word. She won twice over 1000 and 1400 metres. Silva ‘N’ Suave was a $62,000 purchase by Chris Casey and Dinah Rochfort from the draft of Bowness Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Silva ‘N’ Suave is the second winner from five starters for the Bowness Stud-based D’Argento, a Group 1-winning son of So You Think (NZ).
The best performer to date for D’Argento has been Rag Queen, a winner at Canterbury, who then finished third in the R. Listed Inglis Millennium. D’Argento stood the 2023 breeding season at Bowness Stud for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST), covering 78 mares. A 2024 fee has yet to be announced.
Smashing new winner for Brave
The Robert and Luke Price-trained Smashing Time (Brave Smash {Jpn}) improved from his debut third placing to break his maiden at start two at Kembla Grange on Saturday.
Bearing the Australian Bloodstock silks, like his sire did in during his career, Smashing Time, ridden by Robbie Downey was a 1l victor the well-bred Media World (Written Tycoon) and 3l away in third was Interjection (Too Darn Hot {GB}).
Smashing Time is the fourth foal from Trick, a daughter of Street Cry (Ire). She is the dam of Solid Impact (Real Impact {Jpn}), who races under the moniker Super Impact in Singapore and has been placed in the Listed Singapore Gold Cup and the Listed Singapore Derby.
Trick is from the family of the stakes winners Sessions and Haunted, both sons of the late Lonhro, who sadly passed away on Friday.
Smashing Time was a $180,000 purchase by his trainers from the draft of Attunga Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Brave Smash (Jpn) stood the 2023 breeding season at a fee of $33,000 (inc GST) at Yarraman Park Stud, serving 112 mares. A fee for the 2024 breeding season has yet to be confirmed.
