Riff Rocket attempts to copy Mahogany

Last year’s G1 Victoria Derby winner Riff Rocket (American Pharoah {USA}) will attempt to emulate Mahogany (Last Tycoon {Ire}), after both won the Derby followed by the CS Hayes S., with Mahogany going on to win the G1 Australian Guineas with this year’s race on Saturday.

“He was probably similar to Fangirl (in the Apollo Stakes),” trainer Chris Waller told Racing and Sports.

“They were well prepared, they'd had their two trials and I know he likes Flemington, as he was also dominant in an 1800-metre race there in the spring.” Riff Rocket has won five of his eights starts and over $1.6 million.

Waller also has his G1 winner Militarize (Capitalist) in the Guineas, but the colt also holds a nomination for the G1 Randwick Guineas and may go there.

Kah booked for The Map in Adelaide Cup

Jockey Jamie Kah will ride Dan Clarken and Oopy Macgillivray-trained The Map (Alpine Eagle) in the G2 Adelaide Cup on 4 March.

“Kah is locked in,” Clarken told racingandsports.com.au.

“She's obviously been in the mix to ride her since Flemington and her management confirmed her for the ride this week.”

The Map is coming off a first-up win in the Listed JRA Plate followed by second to Yellow Brick (Rubick) in the G3 Lord Reims S. over 2600 metres last start.

“She's pulled up enormous,” Clarken said.

“The plan was to always try and get the back of the McEvoy horse (Unusual Pearl) who had a big spruik on it, but she found herself a long way off them and a lot of horses in front of her. I thought her last 100 metres was solid and we always knew she was going to take a lot out of the second-up run.”

Her full career record is seven wins from 25 starts and earnings over $390,000. She was a $35,000 purchase from Armidale Stud at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale.

“He’s had a long campaign, but we also want to utilise his 3-year-old career. If it's achievable and he’s well, then we will have a go. I think he's a handy horse without being a really great horse, but he also might keep improving with time.”

Bold Soul has won four of his six starts and placed third in both the others with earnings over $270,000. He was a NZ$20,000 purchase at the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale from Te Keeti Bloodstock.

West Australian-trained Zipaway (Playing God) will be hard to beat in Saturday’s G1 Australian Guineas according to trainer Neville Parnham.

“He hasn't done a lot since then - he had a good gallop this morning. The trackwork rider that rode him said he actually felt sensational. Looking forward to Saturday, I think he's going to be very hard to beat.”

“Not many horses would win their maiden and go to a nice race like the Zeditave. The thing about that horse, he's got a bit of capacity about him; the last furlong was good at Sandown and the last furlong was good in the Zeditave.”

Winner of two from two, Raikoke was a $275,000 purchase at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale from the Rushton Park draft.
