A new look Written By (Written Tycoon) will return to action at Caulfield on Saturday when the hot stallion prospect opens his spring campaign.

The 3-year-old’s starting point is the Skyline Education Foundation Plate with the end game a Group 1 dash for cash at Flemington.

“He was a scrawny boy and now he’s furnished into a man,” trainer Grahame Begg said. “He’s 40kg heavier than when he raced as a 2-year-old, he has matured mentally and physically.”

Despite his ‘under-developed’ condition, Written By’s talent was evident last term when he won his first four starts, including the G1 Blue Diamond S., and in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude and the G3 Pago Pago S., either side of the Caulfield feature.

The colt was put aside after he finished a gallant fourth in the G1 Golden Slipper S. “It’s only 1000 metres on Saturday and there’s improvement in him no doubt, but I’m very happy with him,” Begg said.

“His main goal is the Coolmore on Derby Day, 1200 metres up the straight and that’s always been the aim.”

Any talk of life after racing for Written By has been set to one side, for the time being anyway.

“After the autumn, we said to the ones who were interested in him, and there were a lot, that nothing would be considered until after the spring,” Begg said.

“It’s always exciting times in the spring, getting back the horses that showed good ability in the autumn and he’s one of them.”

Family ties

He was bred by Begg’s father Neville, a Hall of Fame trainer, who bought the dam Yau Chin (Tobougg {IRE}) for $3000 at the Inglis Scone Yearling Sale. She is from the family of the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner and champion sire Pins (Snippets).

Written By failed to meet his reserve at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and Begg senior placed the horse with his son, who was then making a return to training after taking a break in 2014.
