Top end holds firm on the second day at MM March as a $290k Pinatubo colt steals the show

12 min read
The Gold Coast March Yearling Sale saw strong demand at the top end, with a $290,000 Pinatubo colt leading the market, but buyers were again very selective within a challenging market. The clearance rate was down from last year, and while the average price held firm, the median was down, which illustrates the strength that remained at the top end.

At A Glance

The 2025 Magic Millions March Yearling Sale grossed $8,265,500 (237 sold) compared to last year's total of $9,130,955 (272 sold) with the clearance rate of 73 per cent down from last year's 77.7 per cent.

The average of $34,876 was up from last year's $33,570 and the median was down from $28,000 to $25,000, an indication of the strength at the top end of the sale.

Last year's highest seller fetched $230,000, a figure which was headed by this year’s topper $290,000 that First Light Racing, Gollan Racing, and John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA) spent on the Pinatubo (Ire) colt from KBL Thoroughbreds. One other yearling made more than $210,000, while across the sale there were 13 six figure yearlings sold.

Last year's leading vendor did it again this year. Eureka Stud sold 23 horses for an average of $46,283 and a gross of $1.064 million. Daandine Stud was the leading vendor by average, selling two yearlings at an average of $112,500 each.

In securing the highest-priced lot, and one other, First Light Racing, Gollan Racing, and John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA) were the biggest buyer spending $355,000. There was a good spread of buyers with three buyers, Vandyke Racing, Kemp Racing, and Embrace Farm, topping the list by number of lots at six yearlings each.

Eureka Stud's Spirit Of Boom had the best average $78,889 from 18 sold and was also the leading sire by gross with receipts of $1.4 million. Barbaric was the leading first season sire with 19 yearlings sold by $706,500 at an average of $37,184.

It’s a really important sale for Queensland breeders

Across the sale over $8.3 million was traded on 240 lots sold at an average price of $34,635 and clearance rate of over 73 per cent.

“It’s a really important sale for the Queensland breeders,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “It’s fantastic to be able to host them again.”

“Overall it was a solid enough day. The clearance rate is a bit lower than we would have liked but it was a strong average and there were plenty of six figure horses.”

“For the right product there were plenty of bidders here on the ground.”

“It was expected going in that it would be a bit tough at the bottom end. On a whole we are very happy with the cross section of buyers.”

“The local market has been solid enough and I’m really happy with buyers from interstate and internationally that complemented what the locals were participating on.”

Bowditch said he wasn’t surprised to see the Pinatubo (Ire) colt at the top of the leaderboard.

“He was a standout colt from the first time we saw him. He was a lovely horse by a really exciting first season sire from Darley.”

“I’m thrilled for Linda – she has been a great supporter of the Magic Millions in so many different facets for many years.”

“She bought Shoot Out here and she is heavily involved with our showjumping and she does a huge amount here in the ring and for Magic Millions in general.”

“The result just shows that if you bring the right horse to the Gold Coast March Yearling Sale you can get well paid,” Bowditch added.

KBL’s star Pinatubo Colt steals the spotlight late on Day 2

Towards the end of Day 2 the 2025 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale delivered one of the standout moments of the entire auction when Lot 351, a striking colt by Pinatubo (Ire), commanded $290,000. KBL Thoroughbreds offered the colt and he was knocked down to the powerful partnership of First Light Racing, Tony Gollan Racing, and John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA).

For Brad Lowe and Kandice Pritchard of KBL, it was a spectacular reward for their hard work and an emotional high point in their sales campaign.

“I woke up with butterflies,” Kandice Pritchard admitted. “I just knew this was going to be a good day.”

She wasn’t wrong. The son of Darley’s Pinatubo, a world champion 2-year-old, attracted sustained interest throughout inspections and sparked a bidding frenzy worthy of his quality.

“He is a special horse,” Pritchard continued. “A nice, big, strong colt, free-moving, with a great brain and attitude.

“He was just so professional. He paraded beautifully and kept his head through it all.”

While confident the colt would attract strong interest, Pritchard was not quite sure what the figure would be.

“I thought he’d make around the $200,000 mark. You know when you’ve got a good one, but this market can still be tricky,” she said. “He had the right people on him, the right judges, plenty of x-ray hits, and all of a sudden, job done.”

Bred by Linda Huddy, the colt is the second living foal from Of The Day, a six-time winning daughter of I Am Invincible. The talented mare showed her class when placing fourth in the Listed UBET Classic.

She also is well-related being a full sister to Most Important (I Am Invincible), a 10-time winner who captured the G3 George Moore Stakes, the Listed Sunshine Cup, and dual editions of the Listed Keith Noud Handicap.

The deeper pedigree is stacked with proven talent, including Group winners Majestic Angel (NZ) (Imperial Seal {GB}), Just A Dream (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}), Forfar (NZ) (Wallenda {USA}), and First Serve (NZ) (Swiss Ace).

“He was the colt of the sale for us,” said Tim Wilson from First Light Racing. “Funnily enough, he was the last horse we looked at.

“KBL’s area was so busy, they asked us to come a bit later, and then we understood why, this colt was outstanding.”

Wilson also confirmed that this sale is becoming a key part of First Light’s calendar.

“Three years ago, we came here and bought The Instructor, who won the Blue Diamond Preview as a 2-year-old and was back to his best at The Valley over the weekend. You can get quality from anywhere, and this is a good sale.”

“Tony Gollan has a great relationship with Linda Huddy, who bred the colt. She’s a fantastic breeder, and he knew the family well. We’re excited about the purchase, we can’t wait to see him wear the gold and blue silks and head to Queensland’s champion trainer.”

With his athletic physique, solid pedigree, and an ideal temperament, Lot 351 has all the makings of a top-tier galloper. Unfortunately, his dam, Of The Day, missed to Spirit of Boom following this colt’s birth but was covered again by the Eureka Stud stallion last spring.

Five more six-figure yearlings fuel top-end momentum

Day 2 of the 2025 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale continued the upward trend seen on opening day, with another five individual lots breaking the six-figure barrier.

The continued demand at the top end of the market further cemented buyer appetite for quality, athletic yearlings. It lifted the $100,000 plus sales total to 13 across the two days—a significant rise from just five in 2024.

The standout result of the day came courtesy of Lot 351, a striking colt by Pinatubo (Ire), who fetched $290,000. Consigned by KBL Thoroughbreds, the colt became the highest-priced yearling of the sale, highlighting the growing interest in emerging young sires.

Pinatubo (Ire) | Standing at Darley

All five six-figure lots on Day 2 were colts, once again representing an encouraging diversity of stallions and pedigrees. Alongside Pinatubo, the sires of these well-supported yearlings included Victor Ludorum (GB), Shalaa (Ire), and two by Queensland favourite Spirit of Boom, whose stock has consistently been in high demand across both days.

Just as varied as the sires were the vendors behind these headline results. Kenmore Lodge enjoyed a standout session, with two of their lots crossing the $100,000 mark, reinforcing their reputation for quality yearlings. KBL Thoroughbreds and Eureka Stud, who had stood out on Day 1, maintained their momentum with further success. Alexia Fraser Bloodstock also recorded their first six-figure result of the 2025 sale.

The strength and competitiveness at the top end have been a defining feature of this year’s March Sale. While clearance rates and middle-market sentiment continue to fluctuate, there’s no doubt that well-conformed, clean-vetted horses by commercial stallions continue to attract premium interest.

With 13 six-figure yearlings now on the books, more than double last year’s total, the 2025 edition of the sale has delivered renewed confidence for breeders and vendors operating at the top tier of the sale.

Spirit Of Boom goes ‘Boom’ again

The Spirit Of Boom momentum continued to roll at the 2025 Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, with Lot 293 emerging as the second top-priced lot of the sale. The powerful colt offered by Kenmore Lodge was knocked down for $210,000 to the Clinton Taylor Racing and Bacon Racing team.

Trainer Clinton Taylor was thrilled to land the colt and had no hesitation in backing the sire, which has brought him plenty of success in recent seasons.

“We love the stallion,” Taylor said. “We’ve had terrific success with him.

He was one we identified. He’s probably more of a 3-year-old, and we’ll give him a bit of time. We really like him and we thought he was good buying.

“I love the stallion,” Taylor added. “There's a little trick to training them and hopefully we can keep going.”

From the moment he arrived at the complex, the colt made a strong impression, and Kenmore Lodge’s Kellie Bond wasn’t surprised by the result.

“He’s a nice horse. He recommended himself. He had a lot of quality,” Bond said.

“He’s a half to a horse with plenty of ability (End Assembly), and he’s by the right stallion. He was the kind of horse that always gave the indication he could make a bit of money.”

Bond was also pleased to see the colt head into a trainer's stable on the rise.

“It was a pretty good result,” she added. “He’s (Clinton Taylor) a good up-and-coming trainer.”

This colt is the fourth foal of the talented Lonhro mare Lonhro’s Spirit, a four-time winner known for her consistent form, including three consecutive victories. Her first foal, End Assembly (Outreach), is a multiple winner who also showed stakes ability by placing in the G3 Fred Best Classic.

The pedigree also features elite performers, including G1 Railway Handicap winner Alynda (Nassau), Victoria Derby winner Hit The Roof, and stakes winners War Ends (Redoute’s Choice) and Stick Seeker (Excites).

Following this colt, Lonhro’s Spirit missed to Better Than Ready and last season was most recently served by Merchant Navy,

A pleasing sale for Glenlogan Park

In a market where clearance rates can pose a genuine challenge, achieving a 100 per cent clearance is no small feat, yet that’s precisely what Glenlogan Park managed at the 2025 Magic Millions March Yearling Sale. All five of their yearlings were sold, ranging from $20,000 to $120,000, resulting in a total return of $364,000 and a healthy average of $72,800, comfortably outperforming the sale average.

Glenlogan Park’s Steve Morley was more than satisfied with the outcome.

“It was a good sale for us. It is a challenging time for many, and the buyers are very selective,” Morley said.

“We sold all of ours at different levels, but they all had clean x-rays, scoped well, and were nice horses.”

That level of preparation and consistency has become synonymous with Glenlogan Park’s drafts, particularly at this sale.

“We sell well out of this sale, so we have good confidence, and buyers can have good confidence buying from our draft.”

Glenlogan’s success at the upper end of the market was underpinned by two six-figure results late on Day 1, a Brave Smash (Jpn) filly that sold for $110,000 and a Spirit Of Boom colt that sold for $120,000. Both of these horses were purchased by Williams Racing and Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA), which Morley said were expected but still pleasing.

“We are naturally happy. They were very nice horses, and we valued them around that mark. They made the money they should have.”

While pleased with the sale, Morley acknowledged the broader economic pressures affecting both breeders and buyers.

“At the moment, the pressure is on everybody, and with the cost of living and all-around costs, it can be challenging. Sometimes you go into a sale thinking horses will make a certain price, and they don’t.”

“So we’re happy. They sold well and, most importantly, went to good homes.”
