Looking Ahead - February 16

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Sunday. A promising 2-year-old filly by Exceedance makes her debut at Toowoomba and a So You Think (NZ) 3-year-old filly makes her debut at Benalla

Toowoomba, Race 1, 12.45pm AEDT (11.45am local), Taylor Building Group QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate, $24,500, 1000m

Ready And Mabel, 2-year-old filly (Exceedance x Peggy Selene {Rubick})

The promising Ready And Mabel is set to make her debut at Toowoomba for local trainer Nicholas Beck on Sunday. She did look talented when winning a trial at Toowoomba on February 3 over 650 metres.

Ready And Mabel is a daughter of Vinery Stud’s Exceedance and is the first foal from the handy Rubick mare Peggy Selene. She saluted the judge three times at 1000 metres including at metropolitan level twice in Melbourne.

Peggy Selene is half-sister to Brutality (Shamus Award) who was a seven-time winner and successful in the G2 Villiers Stakes and General Salute (Russian Revolution) who has been a winner as a juvenile and placed in the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes.

Peggy Selene since producing Ready And Mabel has produced a yearling filly Arrowfield Stud's The Autumn Sun and was most recently served by Russian Revolution last spring.

Bet 365 Benalla, Race 1, 1.18 pm AEDT, Latrobe City Council Mdn Plate., $27,000, 1100m

Of The View, 3-year-old filly (So You Think (NZ) x Felicienne {Al Maher})

The Patrick and Michelle Payne-trained Of The View (So You Think {NZ}) will make her debut at Benalla over 1112 metres. In preparation for this race assignment she has jumped out and trialled nicely at Burrumbeet, Kilmore and Horsham where she managed to run in the top three in all of them.

The promising filly is the fifth foal from the Al Maher mare Felicienne, she was a classy mare winning five times from 1200 metres up to 1700 metres including in the G3 Schweppervescence Trophy at Flemington.

This family has so much depth to it further back and her third dam is the outstanding Candide (NZ) (Sound Reason {Can}) who was successful in the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas and the G1 New Zealand Oaks. Stakes-winners that have descended from Candide include Dylanson (Dylan Thomas {Ire}), Nadeem, Marju Snip (NZ) (Marju {Ire}), Billion Win (Coronation Day), Do Ra Mi (NZ) (Savabeel), Kingdoms (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and Unique Jewellery (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}),

Felicienne since producing Of The View has left a 2-year-old filly by Churchill (Ire), a yearling filly by Tarzino (NZ) and was due to foal to Satono Aladdin (Jpn) last spring but no mare return has been received.

Looking Back

Sword Of Legacy (Too Darn Hot {GB}) - ran an honest race for fourth. She did race very keen throughout and probably has come to the end of her preparation, but it was still a good effort.

Atomic Time (Time Test {GB}) - ran a solid race for third debut, he got a bit lost in front and wilted on his run late. He should improve off that.

You're The Choice (Farnan) - ran a very good second on debut where she narrowly missed in the photo-finish, she looks a speedy 2-year-old filly that can pick up a maiden win shortly
