Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Wednesday. A promising Spirit Of Boom 2-year-old chases maiden success at Doomben. Then Geelong is the venue for an expensive Zoustar filly and a Written Tycoon colt to show what they are made of on the track.

Doomben, Race 1, 1.08pm AEDT (12.08pm local), Portland Sky First Crop Yearlings @ Widden QTIS 2YO H., $85,000, 1200m

La Bella Boom, 2-year-old filly (Spirit Of Boom x La Girl {Not A Single Doubt})

The Tony Gollan-trained Spirit Of Boom filly La Bella Boom will be making her second start at Doomben on Wednesday over 1200 metres. She ran a lovely third on debut at Doomben over 1050 metres where she ran on very strongly to place behind the very promising and unbeaten Betterlucknexttime (Zousain). With that experience under her belt and the extra distance she looks very hard to beat in this event.

This sharply bred filly is the first foal out of the Not A Single Doubt mare La Girl, who was a winner as a juvenile and was classy enough to run fourth in the G3 Ottawa S.

While the page is a little bit quiet of black-type winners up close in the pedigree, there is a very good current link with La Girl being a half-sister to Moldova (Snitzel), she was a two-time winner as a juvenile but has made an outstanding start to her broodmare career leaving the very good filly Captured By Love (Written Tycoon), this season she was successful in the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas earlier this month, she was also previously successful as a 2-year-old in the G2 Wakefield Challenge S., G2 Matamata Breeders S., and the G3 Taranaki Classic.

Deep in the pedigree is a long list of classy Group winners including Hasabro (NZ) (Savabeel), Hasahalo (NZ) (Savabeel), All Saints’ Eve (NZ) (Sacred Falls {NZ}), All Hallows’ Eve (NZ) (Sacred Falls), La Lagune (Danehill {USA}), Addictive Nature and Savvy Nature (NZ) (Savabeel).

La Girl since producing La Bella Boom has left a yearling colt by St Mark’s Basilica (Fr) and most recently foaled a Diatonic (Jpn) filly in August this year.

La Bella Boom was originally purchased for $200,000 by Alice Berry from the Strawberry Hill Stud (Unreserved Dispersal Sale) in 2023 before she was a successful pinhook and sold for $300,000 to Gollan Racing/John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA)/Blacksoil Bloodstock from the draft of Sledmere Stud at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Rambling, 3-year-old filly (Zoustar x Fuddle Dee Duddle {Red Ransom {USA}})

Geelong's Wednesday meeting will be the venue for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr trained well-bred Rambling to make her debut. She has prepared for this assignment with a very quiet trial at Cranbourne on October 16 over 800 metres.

Rambling is by Widden Stud’s outstanding sire in Zoustar and is the seventh foal out of the Red Ransom (USA) mare Fuddle Dee Duddle who was very talented on the track winning four times from 1100 metres to 1600 metres including in the G3 Champion Fillies S. in Perth. She has gone on to become a successful broodmare leaving four individual winners including Brereton (Zoustar) who cost $1,000,000 at the 2021 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and on the track, he has so far saluted the judge three times with the best of these wins being in the G3 Maribyrnong Plate.

Another star galloper within this family is the the talented mare Hallowell Belle (Starcraft {NZ}) who was successful in the G2 Gilgai S. and the Listed Darby Munro S.

Since leaving Rambling, Fuddle Dee Duddle has left a 2-year-old colt by Zoustar named Space Rider who has looked smart at the trials, a yearling colt by Zoustar and she foaled a Zoustar filly in September this spring.

Rambling was purchased for $1,450,000 by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA) from the draft of Longwood Thoroughbred Farm at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Ladbrokes Geelong, Race 4, 2.45pm AEDT, Rex Gorell Volkswagen (Emerging Stars Series Heat 10), $75,500, 1300m

Poroto (NZ), 3-year-old colt (Written Tycoon x Dolmabache {NZ} {Redoute’s Choice)

The well-related Poroto (NZ) (Written Tycoon) is set to make his second start over 1300 metres at Geelong for trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy on Wednesday. On debut Poroto ran a solid third at Swan Hill over 1200 metres behind Oak Park Rebel (Rebel Raider). He has since had a spell and on pedigree that time should be of assistance and he will come back a stronger colt.

Poroto is out of the classy Dolmabache (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) who was victorious in the G2 Travis S., and is a sister to Pure Elegance (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice) who won the G3 Gold Trail S., and the stakes-placed Les Crayeres (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice). The Makfi (GB) mare Cote D’Or is also a half-sister, She was a talented filly on the track and saluted the judge eight times from 1200 metres up to 2200 metres. Her wins included the Listed Matamata Cup H.

Poroto was a NZ$175,000 purchase by KPW Bloodstock from the draft of Pencarrow Stud at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

Looking Back

Bang Stick (Pierata) won impressively at Mackay at good odds, he was strong to the line and run down the leader in the shadows of the post.

Akuma (Street Boss {USA}) ran a solid race for fourth at Ararat, he continues to improve each start and a win does look close.
