Looking Ahead - November 12

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Two exciting 3-year-old runners are set to hit the track on Tuesday. A Belardo (Ire) gelding out of a half-sister to Turn Me Loose (NZ) debuts at Te Aroha and a well-bred I Am Invincible gelding resumes at Hawkesbury.

Te Aroha, Race 2, 11.18am AEDT (1.18pm local), Kilgravin Lodge 3YO Mdn, $18,500, 1150m

Brego (NZ), 3-year-old gelding (Belardo {Ire} x Dwandaofu {NZ} {Align})

The Shelley Hale-trained Belardo (Ire) gelding Brego (NZ) will be making his debut at Te Aroha on Tuesday over 1150 metres. He trialled up nicely at Te Aroha when running fourth over 1100 metres on October 23 in preparation for his debut. He showed a bit of talent that day running on nicely without a lot of urging from well back in the field.

This gelding is the fourth live foal out of the Align mare Dwandaofu (NZ), who only raced twice on the track, but she holds plenty of appeal being a half-sister to the Windsor Park Stallion and talented racehorse in Turn Me Loose (NZ). He was a seven-time winner on the track from 1200 metres to 1600 metres in New Zealand and Australia and his wins included the G1 2000 Guineas, G1 Emirates S., G1 Futurity S., G2 Hawkes Bay Guineas, G2 Schweppes Crystal Mile and the Listed Seymour Cup.

She has also done a good job at stud leaving two winners including Denby Road (NZ) (Shamexpress {NZ}) who so far has won twice including tasting success in the G3 Cambridge Breeders’ S. and her other winner has been Storm To Win (NZ) (Storm Creek {USA}) who won eight times in Malaysia and Singapore.

Brego has very strong female pedigree influences in his page with his second, third and fourth dams having influential broodmare sires such as Danehill (USA), Sadler’s Wells (USA) and Shirley Heights (GB).

Dwandaofu since producing Brego has not left a live foal, but she was due to foal to Windsor Park Stud’s exciting son of Deep Impact (Jpn) in Profondo in September this year.

Hawkesbury, Race 4, 3.40pm AEDT, St Johns Park Bowling Club Mdn Plate, $42,000, 1300m

Carnegie Hill, 3-year-old gelding (I Am Invincible x Aquamosa {NZ} {Alamosa {NZ}})

Hawkesbury’s Tuesday meeting will serve as the venue for the third start in the career of Carnegie Hill, a well-bred son of I Am Invincible from the Michael Freedman stable at Randwick. He trialled up sharply at Randwick on June 14 over 1050 metres beating the well-bred filly Arriving Home (I Am Invincible) impressively by just over 2l before running moderate sixths at Randwick and Rosehill in July. After having a nice break, he has been gelded and had two trials to get himself ready for a weaker maiden race at Hawkesbury.

Carnegie Hill is the third foal out of the handy filly Aquamosa (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}). She was successful twice at 1100 and 1400 metres and also managed to place in the G3 Taranaki 2YO Classic as a juvenile.

Carnegie Hill has some solid blood within his pedigree, his second-dam Adalia (NZ) was a two-time winner and is a half-sister to the Singapore Champion Big Maverick (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and El Laoob (USA) (Red Ransom {USA}) who was stakes-placed in Great Britain.

Adalia’s dam Ajfan (USA) (Woodman {USA}) was Group 1-placed in the Ascot Fillies Mile and the Thousand Guineas in Great Britain and did a great job at stud leaving ten winners.

Aquamosa since producing Carnegie Hill has left a 2-year-old colt by I Am Invincible named Jimmy Recard, an I Am Invincible yearling filly and most recently carried on the ‘Vinny’ theme by foaling a filly in October by his Group 1 winning son in Hellbent.

Carnegie Hill was a $400,000 purchase by Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA) from the draft of Yarraman Park Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Looking Back

Sunday runners:

Carsolio (Bivouac) ran a solid second on debut, he didn't look like he enjoyed the heavy track conditions but battled on solidly.

Break Free (Capitalist) could not have been more impressive winning on debut, she looks a filly with a big future and is one to watch.

Villandry (Epaulette) stormed home late to run third, it was a good effort, and he should be winning a maiden soon.
