Letter to the Editor: A Farewell from Jen Campin

With a combined 80 years in the New Zealand thoroughbred industry, 21 years as Jen Campin Bloodstock, the time has come for me to step back. It has been an incredible journey filled with some remarkable successes as a breeder and owner — From taking the old Chequers Stud to the then new exciting presence it had, I’m very proud.

Derby winners, Group 1 triumphs in New Zealand, Australia Hong Kong, Asia and partnerships with some wonderful people. One dream remains: to see Wyndspelle (NZ), succeed in Australia. His progeny are beginning to race, and I will be watching their progress with immense pride and hope.

Wyndspelle (NZ) | Standing at Wyndholm Park

Establishing our multiple Group 1 and Guineas winner Wyndspelle has been challenging, particularly without the backing of New Zealand’s major stud farms. Despite my long-standing support of many of their stallions throughout my lengthy career, I’ve found myself on the outside looking in. A tough position made more difficult as a strong independent woman.

I’ve based my career on honesty and integrity and haven’t got involved in playing the biased politics of the male-dominated New Zealand breeding industry. With pride in what I’ve achieved, and my head held high, it's time to move on.

I’ve been fortunate enough to achieve nearly all my goals in this industry, and while Wyndspelle’s full potential has yet to be realized, I’ll continue to dream of his success. Now, I’m ready to heed the advice of my children, who remind me that you’ve given your life to the industry, and you deserve the very best mum. They’ve seen the recent toll it has taken over the last 12 months due to specific client's debts/dishonesty that will continue to be resolved. It is my also belief it’s time for me to focus on myself/family—especially all my 12 beloved grandchildren.

I want to offer my deepest thanks to my family, those loyal friends/colleagues who have supported me over the years. Wentwood Grange and Carla, your kindness and belief in me will never be forgotten.

There will be a genuine dispersal sale of my bloodstock this Friday, November 1 on Inglis Digital. For those of you who buy the ‘family jewels in the making’, I sincerely wish you all the very best.

As for Wyndspelle himself, I still hold onto the hope that his story is far from over.

With pride, I say, Thank you and farewell.
