All eyes were on Rosehill Gardens and Flemington on Friday morning, with several close relations showing they were ready to fire on the racetrack, and Widden Stud-based Zoustar had the lion’s share of top performers.

Well-related juvenile makes first public appearance for Newgate and partners

Wearing the red and yellow of the Newgate/Chine Horse Club Syndicate, 2-year-old Tropic (Zoustar) did not need much urging from Jason Collett to move up in the home straight and overtake Miss Orth (Exosphere), pulling away to a 0.81l win in Rosehill’s juvenile trial on Friday morning. The Chris Waller trainee was having his first public trial and his ownership group could not be disappointed with his professional performance.

Out of Lone (Sepoy), an unraced half-sister to three stakes winners, Tropic was slated to be offered by Widden Stud at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale this year, however, was withdrawn and offered instead at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock and Trilogy Racing combined to buy the colt for $440,000. As well as winning at Listed level, Lone’s half-sister Gai’s Choice (General Nediym) foaled Listed Reginald Allen H. winner I Like It Easy (Pierro), who in turn produced G3 PJ Bell S. victress Facile (Trapeze Artist). Another Listed-winning half-sister, Peron (Husson {ARG}), produced G3 WJ Healy S.-winning Juan Diva (Snitzel).

Lone’s first foal was a full brother to Tropic, Listed Blue Diamond Preview placed Philosopher. She foaled a filly by Trapeze Artist last year, and was covered by Widden’s first-season sire Jacquinot.

Facile back in good form at Rosehill

A dominant all-the-way leader in her Rosehill trial, Facile held off home straight attacks from Infatuation (I Am Invincible) and Scorch (Impending) to win her heat by 0.25l. The Alma Vale Thoroughbreds-owned 4-year-old mare was transferred to the care of Peter Snowden following a last start failure at Eagle Farm and her subsequent appearance at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

A $420,000 purchase for Ryan and Alexiou Racing from Widden Stud at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale two years ago, Facile accumulated three placings at stakes level in her juvenile year, before breaking her maiden last October. She was consigned by Newgate Farm on the Magic Millions Gold Coast this year, where her new owners Alma Vale paid $700,000 for the daughter of Listed-winning I Like It Easy.

Grandam Gai’s Choice (General Nediym) is a half-sister to Listed Dilmah Earl Grey S. winner Atmospherical (Northern Meteor), and further back the family features G1 Oakleigh Plate victor Eagle Falls (Hussonet). I Like It Easy has been wedded to G1 All Aged S. winner Trapeze Artist for her entire breeding career, producing three full sisters to Facile so far and is expecting another full sibling this spring.

Schwarz out to shine in late spring

Four-year-old entire Schwarz (Zoustar) made easy work of his open trial rivals at Rosehill on Friday morning, settling second for most of the trip before showing an electric turn of foot to pull away 2.64l ahead of runner up Eagle Nest (Shalaa {Ire}). The John O'Shea and Tom Charlton-trained stallion was last seen trialling at the end of August, almost three weeks after his victory in the G2 Missile S. He holds a nomination for the G1 Golden Eagle, his trainers choosing to skip the lead up race, the $1,000,000 Silver Eagle, this weekend.

The first named foal out of G2 Angus Armanasco S. victress Summer Sham (Not A Single Doubt), Schwarz was a $1,250,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for Rosemont-Victorian Alliance, Suman Hedge Bloodstock (FBAA), and David Redvers Bloodstock, where he was offered by Widden Stud. His full brother Tuscany was sold to China Horse Club, Newgate, Go Bloodstock, and Trilogy Racing for $1,550,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale this year, and ran fifth in the G3 Breeders’ Plate earlier this month.

Seeing as the full sister Silver Wedding, now a 3-year-old, sold to Cambridge Stud for $800,000 at last year’s Inglis Easter sale, Widden have wisely continued Summer Sham’s association with Zoustar, producing a colt by him last year and a filly in August. Zoustar fans have been undeterred by the stallion’s rise in fee, in line with his meteoric rise as a sire, as he has never covered less than 150 mares in any season at stud.

Promising Russian Revolution colt is backed by bloodlines

Schwarz was not the only member of his family making a good impression at Rosehill on Friday, as close relation Revolt (Russian Revolution) put his rivals to bed with a 1.51l victory in his maiden heat. Trained by Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou, the 3-year-old colt has not been to the races yet, but has now strung two nice trial wins together, suggesting there are big things to come for the son of Newgate Farm’s Champion First and Second Season Sire.

Offered by Vinery Stud, Revolt was a $500,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for Kia Ora Stud Pty Ltd, TFI, and his trainers. Since then, other big names such as Yulong Investments, Madden Bloodstock, and Werrett Bloodstock have joined the ownership.

He is out of Hot Summer Night (Fusaichi Pegasus {USA}), making him a half-brother to Summer Sham, dam of the aforementioned Schwarz. His grandam is an unraced daughter of Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad), tying the family close to Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain, and Rubick.

Hot Summer Night has produced two full sisters to Revolt, and the 2-year-old was bought by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock (FBAA), Price Kent Racing and Coolarest Farm for $140,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast this year. Last year, Hot Summer Night was covered by Aquis Farm’s Hong Kong Group 1 winner Stronger. Russian Revolution has sired eleven stakes winners to date, led by G1 Randwick Guineas victor Communist.

Tycoon colt emerges as Star in juvenile jump-out

Several 2-year-olds hit the line hard in the first juvenile jump-out at Flemington on Friday morning, but Tycoon Star (Written Tycoon) emerged victorious, pulling clear of Zebra Finch (Exceed And Excel) to win. He was a $400,000 purchase for trainers Lindsay Park Racing at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January, and breeders Yulong Stud have since reinvested in the colt.

Tycoon Star is the first foal of Miss Iano (Equiano {Fr}), who ran third in the G3 Furphy Sprint on her way to accumulating eight wins on the track. She is a granddaughter of Listed Ottawa S. runner up Princess Shorna (Last Tycoon {Ire}), who is a half-sister to G1 Caulfield Guineas victor Kenwood Melody (Royal Academy {USA}) and Listed Anniversary Cup winner Kalamarco (Kala Dancer {GB}), as well as the dam of Listed Belle Of The Turf H. winning Hidden Wonder (Danzero).

Miss Iano delivered a colt by Home Affairs last year, which was offered by Pepper Tree Farm at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Weanling Sale this winter and was bought by James Bester Bloodstock for $280,000. She was then covered by Anamoe and Written Tycoon, expecting a foal to the latter sometime this spring. The Panthalassa Syndicate paid $310,000 for her at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale.

Huge turn of foot for Lindsay Park Ole Kirk colt

Neverenoughlego (Ole Kirk) proved too good for the rest of his rivals in the second Flemington juvenile jump-out, leading all the way in the 800-metre contest. The Lindsay Park Racing-trained colt kicked away nicely in the home stretch to replicate his previous jump-out victory two weeks ago at Pakenham.

The second foal of six-time winner Excessabeel (NZ) (Savabeel), Neverenoughlego was a $130,000 purchase at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA), who went to $340,000 at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale to secure his three-quarter sister, She Mogul (Written Tycoon). Both were offered by Goodwood Farm on behalf of breeder Gillian Madge.

Neverenoughlego descends from G1 Auckland Cup victress Royal Tiara (NZ) (Blanco {USA}), and through her is related to Von Hauke (NZ) (Savabeel), who won the G3 Shaftesbury Avenue H. in Flemington earlier this year. Excessabeel produced a colt by Hellbent last season and is due to foal to Russian Revolution next month. Ole Kirk has had a flying start to his stud career with his son King Kirk taking out the G3 Breeders’ Plate and daughter O’ Ole running second in the G3 Gimcrack S.

Marble Nine knocks them for six

Malua Racing’s Marble Nine (Kobayashi) left his rivals in the barriers in his Flemington jump-out, posting a time of 47.1s for the 800-metre heat. The 4-year-old gelding led from the jump and created an ever-widening margin all the way to the line, to produce an impressive victory. A winner of three of his starts and stakes placed twice, Marble Nine last raced at the end of September.

Retained to race by his breeders Palya Bloodstock, Marble Nine is the second named foal from Aura Lee (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}), a winning three-quarter sister to G1 Queensland Oaks runner up Rathsallagh (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and Q3 Queen Elizabeth S. placed Paddy O’Reilly (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}). Also close in the family is Listed Warstep S. victress Te Akau Sun (NZ) (Desert Sun {GB}). Aura Lee has returned to Kobayashi three times since Marble Nine, producing two fillies and a colt, before missing this season to Extreme Warrior. Kobayashi sired his first stakes winner this year when his daughter Mishani Lily won the Listed Dalrello S., and earned himself a fee rise to $15,000 (inc GST).

Sunlight connection shining in Canberra

A three-quarter sister in blood to champion mare Sunlight (Zoustar) trialled smartly at Canberra on Friday, putting 1.04l on her nearest rival in the 900-metre heat. Five-year-old mare Sunchyme (Zoustar) picked up her first win last August for Keith Dryden and David O’Keeffe’s Lockyer Thoroughbreds and has notched up two more at Moruya since. She rattled home in 52.72s, looking as professional as her famous relative.

Bred by Peter Horwitz and offered through the draft of Segenhoe Stud at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Sunchyme was originally purchased by Tony Noonan Racing for $300,000. After a string of green trials and one race day outing, she was transferred from Joseph Pride to the Canberra-based Dryden stable. She is the second foal of Solar Cry (Street Cry {Ire}), a half-sister to G1 Coolmore Stud S. victress Sunlight.

Zoustar counts two full sisters to Sunlight among his stakes winners, with Clean Energy winning the Listed Bill Carter S. in May. Solar Cry was sold to Cambridge Stud for $310,000 in 2022 and foaled a filly by the late Lonhro last spring, before being covered by Champion New Zealand 2YO Sword Of State.
