A number of trials and jump-outs were host across Australia on Monday. Godolphin’s sprinters shone at the Hawkesbury trials, with Blue Illusion (Blue Point {Ire}) and Tamerlane (Golden Horn {GB}) impressing, while Hayasugi (Royal Meeting {Ire}) and others showcased their potential for upcoming races.
Godolphin sprinters out in force at Hawkesbury
The Blue Army released another potential sprinting star in the Hawkesbury trials on Monday, where Blue Illusion sizzled home in 46.7s in the 800-metre heat, leaving Walk The Pier (Alabama Express) 2.52l behind. He ran his final 600 metres in 32.47s.
Third in the Kirkham Plate and placed a further two times as a 2-year-old, Blue Illusion is the fourth foal of Listed Denise’s Joy S. winner Alucinari (Street Cry {Ire}), out of a Redoute’s Choice half-sister to G3 QLD Winter S. victress Charmview (Royal Academy {USA}). Charmview has left full siblings Luqyaa (Exceed And Excel), dam of Group 3-winning Tannhauser (Dundeel {NZ}), and G2 Roman Consul S.-placed Knight Exemplar, who stands at stud at Brisbane Meadows. Four-time Group 1 winner Blue Point (Ire) returned to Darley’s Northwood Park to stand a fifth season at $44,000 (inc GST).
Godolphin’s Tamerlane (Golden Horn {GB}) also returned well in a later Hawkesbury heat, running the 800 metres in 47.03s and surging late to snatch victory from South Of India (Churchill {Ire}) by 0.18l. The 10-time winner claimed the Listed Winter S. in his last campaign, adding to his previous black type victory in the Listed Paris Lane S.
Out of Wordcraft (GB) (Sharmardal {Ire}), Tamerlane is one of two Southern Hemisphere stakes winners for his G1 The Derby-winning sire, Golden Horn (GB), who stands at Overbury Stud in England. His second dam Forensics (Flying Spur) was Champion 2YO Filly in Australia and New Zealand 2006-2007, winning three Group 1s including the G1 Golden Slipper. Wordcraft’s half-sister Admissible (Lonhro) produced Heuristic (Stress Boss {USA}), a Group 3 winner at two. Wordcraft is due to foal this spring to Bivouac, who’s first 2-year-olds have hit the trials this season across Australia.
Hayasugi ticks over with Cranbourne jump-out
G1 Blue Diamond S. victress Hayasugi (Royal Meeting {Ire}) had a cruisy jump-out on Monday morning at Cranbourne, following eventual winner Philosopher (Zoustar) into the home straight and extending away from the pack without much pressure, finishing on the heels of the five-time winning gelding. Beaten 5.1l in the G1 Manikato S. at her last start in September, she holds a nomination for the $300,000 Millennium Sprint at Caulfield this Saturday.
Hayasugi was a $47,500 weanling purchase for James Bester Bloodstock and C Mok, who spotted her at the Inglis Australian Weanling Sale in 2022. Prepared by Clinton McDonald, she gave her Lovatsville-based sire his first stakes winner when winning the G3 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies), followed swiftly by the G2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies), before defeating subsequent G1 Golden Slipper S. victress Lady Of Camelot (Written Tycoon) in the Blue Diamond. Her dam, China Road (Commands), has not produced a foal since, missing to several stallions before testing positive to Widden’s freshman sire Jacquinot late last season and is due to foal to him later this spring. Winner of the G1 Criterium International, Royal Meeting (Ire) sees his fee double this year to $22,000 (inc GST).
Son of Russian Camelot emerges a star at Cranbourne
A son of Widden Victoria-based Russian Camelot (Ire) turned heads when winning his juvenile jump-out at Cranbourne on Monday. Out of Hannah Luxe (Written Tycoon), an unraced daughter of G2 Matriarch S. runner up Happy Hannah (More Than Ready {USA}), the Ciaron Maher trainee loomed up from the middle of the pack on the home straight and stretched out to win by 0.5l over a Justify (USA) colt out of Casuarina Forest (Fastnet Rock), an unraced full sister to Foxwedge.
John Foote Bloodstock (FBAA) and Sct Syndications paid $50,000 for the colt at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale where he was offered by breeders Telemon Thoroughbreds. Hannah Luxe produced a filly by Bivouac last spring, and is due to foal to Blue Point (Ire) this year. Winner of the G1 Underwood S. and runner up in The All-Star Mile at his final start, Russian Camelot stands his fourth season at Widden Victoria for $19,800 (inc GST).
Another speedy Tycoon for Bennett Racing
Bennett Racing and Ciaron Maher unveiled a smart juvenile at Cranbourne when Military Tycoon (Written Tycoon) took out her 800-metre jump-out in 46.6s. While slightly slow out of the gates, the filly needed little urging in the home straight to skip away from her rivals, with only stablemate Kaleo (Churchill {Ire}) attempting to catch her.
The third foal of Listed Beaufine S. winner Military Reign (Universal Ruler), Military Tycoon was purchased by Bennett Racing for $200,000 from Emirates Park, on behalf of breeders Merricks Station, at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in January. Military Reign produced a filly by The Autumn Sun last year, and awaits a foal by So You Think (NZ) this season. Now in his early twenties, Written Tycoon is the sire of Bennett Racing’s two-time Group 1-winning stallion prospect Southport Tycoon and serves a private book at Yulong Stud this year.
Smart filly jumps out for Hanseatic
Hanseatic produced a jump-out winner among his first crop of 2-year-olds at Cranbourne on Monday, when his chestnut filly out of Tiz My View (Snitzel) darted home to victory in a 650-metre heat. She crossed the line in a tidy 38.94s, ahead of a Snitzel filly out of Love You Lucy (Love Conquers All) and a Farnan colt out of Gold Gasselle (Deep Field).
Trainer Lloyd Kennewell, Group 1 Bloodstock (FBAA), and Edgar Park paid $38,000 for the granddaughter of Listed-winning Miss Tizzy (USA) (Cee’s Tizzy {USA}) at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where she was offered by Yulong Stud. The family is full of consistent Northern Hemisphere performers, including G2 Santa Anita Santa Ynez S. winner Awesome Baby (USA) (Awesome Again {USA}), and Listed Sweet Briar Too S. winner Amiable Grace (USA) (Alphabet Soup {USA}). Dam Tiz My View was a two-time winner on the track and ran fourth in the Listed Festival of Racing S. before beginning her stud career. She produced a colt by Yulong resident Written Tycoon last year, and visited him again afterwards. Blue Diamond Prelude winner Hanseatic covers his fourth book at Rosemont Stud this year for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST).
Old bloodlines run deep at Townsville juvenile trials
Satisfied Mugs (Invader) provides a satisfying result in a Townsville trial win for trainer Georgie Holt, who paid $23,000 for the chestnut colt at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Waylon J Stud. His four-time winning dam Smug Satisfaction (Sebring) was bred by Sydney solicitor Fred Peisah, who consigned yearlings under his Lomar Park Stud banner for 50 years. Satisfied Mugs descends directly from Peisah’s foundation mare Social Smile (GB) (Ennis {Ire}), from whom Peisah has bred over 100 winners. Smug Satisfaction is a granddaughter of Social Smile’s stakes-producing daughter Ever Elegant (Steel Pulse {GB}), connected by Elegant Jewel (Mister C {USA}), whose full brother Super Elegant won two Group 1s.
Satisfied Mugs is preceded by one foal, March Madness (Dubious), and followed with a yearling filly by Dubious and a colt by Stronger born this spring. Standing at $8800 (inc GST) at Aquis Farm this year, Invader will be represented in the upcoming G1 The Everest this weekend by his Group 1-winning daughter, Sunshine In Paris.
Admirable trial debut for son of Hong Kong sprinter miler
The 400-metre juvenile trial at Belmont was taken out by first timer My Riches (My Admiration), edging out Fila Mia (Safeguard) to score by 0.19l. Trained by Mitchell Pateman, the 2-year-old gelding was a $1000 yearling purchase for Emily Quartermaine from the Western Breeders Alliance, acting as agents for NSW-based breeders G & C Pastoral, when offered at the Perth Winter Yearling Sale. He presents an interesting piece of breeding, being out of Snitzerella (Snitzel) who broke her maiden at Broome, and by Hong Kong raced My Admiration, who stands at Westbury Stud for $4400 (inc GST).
Racing in Hong Kong as Admiration, the son of Encosta De Lago won seven races including the G2 The Chairman’s Trophy and has produced two stakes winners from small crops. His dam Provence (Redoute’s Choice) won the Listed Desirable H. and is a full sister to G1 Hong Kong Sprint winner Inspiration and a three-quarter sister to sire Wandjina. My Admiration is bred on the same Encosta De Lago x Redoute’s Choice cross as superstar sire Zoustar.
Two for two for Brave Mead relation at Belmont trials
Hold My Wine (Safeguard) stepped out for his second trial at Belmont on Monday, and claimed the juvenile heat over 1000 metres, accounting for runner up Brazen Butcher (Snippetson) by 0.93l. Trained by Daniel and Ben Pearce out of Karnup, he was previously victorious in a mixed age 400-metre trial at the Lark Hill Training Complex a week before.
Purchased for $90,000 by the Pearce Racing Ladies syndicate at the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale, where he was offered by Mogumber Park, Hold My Wine is the third named foal from Tej (Bernadini {USA}), an unraced full sister to Listed-winning Solemn and half-sister to the departed G3 Manfred S. victor Brave Mead (Brave Smash {Jpn}). Dam Mead (Galileo {Ire}) is a half-sister to G1 Australiasian Oaks victress La Volta (Laranto) and dual Listed winner Terevega (Laranto). Tej produced no foals since Hold My Wine and passed away last year while in foal to G2 Rubiton S. winner Marine One. Bred by Darley, Safeguard won the G3 Kindergarten S. and the G3 Vain S. before making his way to Mogumber Park, where he stands for $4400 (inc GST).
