Baystone Farm has had a fantastic year with the graduates off their farm, with the likes of Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Bittercreek (Snitzel), and stakes winners Aardvark (Capitalist) and Epimeles (Dundeel {NZ}) coming through their program. Hong Kong’s rising star Call Me Glorious (No Nay Never {USA}) came from Baystone Farm’s 2022 Inglis ReadyToRace Sale draft.

“We’ve had a good twelve months coming into this with Bittercreek and a few others coming through our trading program. We’ve got another in Queensland called Balastier, he looks a really nice horse too. Hopefully it will continue,” said Harvey. Balastier (Brazen Beau) was a winner at two from three starts in 2023/24.

In 2024, they will bring a draft of 13 2-year-olds to the Inglis ReadyToRace Sale.

Focus for Baystone is on Hong Kong

Baystone Farm's Harvey has strong connection to Hong Kong where they do plenty of trading, both through this sale and privately.

“I’ve just got back from Hong Kong where I was able to talk to trainers and owners, and everything seems positive up there. There are several trainers coming to the sale.

“This sale can be a bit polarising. I think the top end will be very good but with Singapore and Macau out, it’ll leave a bit of a gap in that middle market and locally, many trainers still have horses to sell from the yearling sales, so they might not be massive either.”

It's not all dire news, as Harvey says, “the results from this sale means trainers pay attention to it.”

Harvey takes horses from the yearling sales and puts them through an education program that results in various different options for trading, either through sales like the Inglis ReadyToRace Sale or via private sales through the trials.

Biggest Inglis draft to date

“This is our biggest draft ever for this sale. We trade through the year, but targeted this sale specifically with these ones. We paid $370,000 for one at the sales and I imagine he’s the highest priced yearling there. He’s super quick and ready to go and has already won an 800-metre jump-out at Flemington.”

Lot 101, a Capitalist colt from Medic (Snitzel) was purchased from Newgate Farm at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $370,000 and is indeed the most expensive yearling to be re-offered at this sale. He breezed at Wangaratta in 10.68s. The first foal of Medic, who is a full sister to both G1 Golden Slipper winner Estijaab and G3 Concorde S. winner Remarque, this colt’s second dam is Group 1-winning sprinter Response (Charge Forward).

“Hong Kong will be our main target,” Harvey said in regards to this draft of horses. “We have a splattering of horses by stallions that Hong Kong love, a Deep Field colt who is really nice and a well bred Toronado who is very popular in Hong Kong. A bit for everyone.”

The Deep Field, Lot 6, is the first foal of Listed Daybreak Lover Plate winner All Over Bosanova (Court Command) and he breezed in 11.24, while the Toronado (Ire), Lot 24, is out of Catena (Hinchinbrook) who is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Felicienne (Al Maher) and Listed winner Dylanson (Dylan Thomas {Ire}). He breezed in 11.37.

“The Capitalist out of Sister Sledge has also won an 800-metre jump-out. Two others trialled well without winning, the Churchill and the Lucky Vega, both at Flemington. If they are forward enough to trial, then we’ll take them there (as part of their sale preparation).”

The Capitalist, Lot 159, is the second foal of G2 Reisling S.-placed winner Sister Sledge (Uncle Mo {USA}) from the family of Hong Kong’s G1 Al Quoz Sprint winner Amber Sky (Exceed And Excel). He breezed in 10.66s.

Churchill (Ire) gelding, Lot 59, is a half-brother to exciting progressive galloper Oh Too Good (All Too Hard) who has won two of his four starts this season from the family of sire Holy Roman Emperor. He breezed in 11.08.

Lucky Vega (Ire), who had his first 2-year-old winner in New Zealand last week, is the sire of Lot 167, who is the second foal of winning mare Soul Purpose (Pierro), a half-sister to Group 3 winner Solar Charged (Charge Forward), the dam of G1 Coolmore Stud S. winner Sunlight (Zoustar) and her stakes winning full siblings Sisstar and Clean Energy. He breezed in 11.57s.

Only one filly in the draft

“The filly is top line, we think she’s very, very, good. She got close to a trial and we expect big things from her.”

Lot 166 is a Written Tycoon filly who breezed in 10.5s. She is a daughter of dual Group 1 winner Soriano (NZ) (Savabeel), making her a half-sister to Listed Amanda Elliot S-placed Alsonso (Zoustar). Her second dam is Listed Wagga Gold Cup winner Call Me Lily (NZ) (Just A Dancer {NZ}), who is the dam of Soriano and her full brother Group 3 winner Kaizer Franz (NZ), as well as the granddam of G1 NZ Derby winner Rocket Spade (Fastnet Rock). She breezed up in 10.5s.
