Gimcrack Stakes background check

22 min read
The juvenile racing season kicks off on Saturday, with black type up for grabs at Randwick Racecourse for both colts and fillies. A full field of fourteen fillies line up for the G3 Gimcrack S., with four more emergencies waiting in the wings for their chance at early stakes success.

First run in 1906 and won by Maltine (Maltster), who would go on to win four more stakes races, the Gimcrack has long been a springboard for juvenile filly success. Last year’s winner, Manaal (Tassort), has picked up three stakes victories since, including taking out the G1 Sires’ Produce S. in April.

Bjorn Baker and Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott match each other in numbers, presenting three runners each. Bjorn Baker has yet to win the feature, but his this year are strong with Alabama Charm (Alabama Express), O’ Ole (Ole Kirk), and Strada Varenna (Street Boss {USA}). Tulloch Lodge match him with Bellazaine (Zousain), Scrumptious (Tassort), and Voting Rights (Snitzel).

No other trainer has more than one runner accepted, and last year’s victor Michael Freedman does not have any acceptors in the race. Training on his own this year after the amicable dissolution of the partnership with son Paul, Peter Snowden hopes that Memo (Capitalist) can be his first winner since Catch Me (I Am Invincible) in 2018.

Three first season sires get their cabs off the rank in this race, although Ole Kirk will be represented by his official first runner half an hour beforehand, with King Kirk set to kick off in the G3 Breeders’ Plate.

Cool Aza Beel (NZ) and Earthlight (Ire) have one runner apiece, a particularly exciting feat for the latter as his first crop, born off of a $22,000 covering fee, numbered 63 foals, only 14 of which have been named to date.

Newhaven Park Stud will be pleased should Cool Aza Beel’s daughter Sequel, currently second emergency, gain a start. The NZ Horse Of The Year and Champion Sprinter/Miler offers enticing value compared to many of the sires represented, standing for $16,500 for his fourth season at the Boorowa property. He has had a trial winner on either side of the Tasman, with Cool Aza Rene taking out a 800-metre contest at Arawa Park last month before Sequel won her heat in Doomben.

Newgate Farm stalwart Capitalist is the most represented sire with three acceptances - Memo, Gail Jeanette, and Lighthouse Lass - including emergencies. Absent from the breeding barn this year due to injury, The Autumn Sun is represented by Autumn Blonde, a fellow graduate from Arrowfield Stud.

Of the nineteen acceptors, all but three were purchased at public auction, with Memo and Scrumptious tied for top price at $350,000, whereas Luma Light (Earthlight {Ire}) was purchased for $35,000 and fourth emergency Penpel (Written By) was knocked down for $20,000.
