Looking Ahead - August 17

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Saturday, including a Brazen Beau mare from the family of Redoute's Choice chasing maiden success at Kembla Grange, and two expensive purchases by The Autumn Sun and Snitzel battle it out at Rosehill.

Kembla Grange, Race 3, 1.40pm, AEST, Zac Lloyd Champion Apprentice Midway Mdn P., $45,000, 1000m

Juste Un Clou, 4-year-old mare (Brazen Beau x Lady Cartier {Fastnet Rock})

Juste Un Clou (Brazen Beau) makes her fourth start on her home track at Kembla Grange on Saturday over 1000 metres. Her form overall has been mixed but she has seldom been far away in all of her starts with the best of them being her close-up third placing at Goulburn last December.

Juste Un Clou is by Brazen Beau out of Lady Cartier (Fastnet Rock), who is a three-quarter-sister to the three-time Group 1 winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock) and the Listed winning gelding Groundswell (Fastnet Rock). She is also a half-sister to the talented gelding Rustic Steel (Deep Field) who has been successful nine-times including in the G3 Newcastle Newmarket H., and the Listed Scone Cup.

Other classy performers that feature in this pedigree are the stallions Redoute’s Choice, Manhattan Rain, Echoes Of Heaven and Platinum Scissors.

S Hill was the purchaser for $140,000 at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Tyreel Stud.

Lady Cartier, since producing Juste Un Clou, has left a three-year-old named Vinniro (I Am Invincible) that has been unplaced on the track, a two-year-old by Zoustar named Belle Du Monde that is so far unraced and is due to foal to Almanzor (Fr) this spring.

Autumn Glow, 3-year-old filly (The Autumn Sun x Via Africa {Saf} {Var {USA}})

The regally-bred Autumn Glow is set to make her debut over 1300 metres on her home track for Rosehill trainer Chris Waller on Saturday. She has trialled up nicely in preparation having won two out of her three trials. Most recently she won very nicely over 900 metres on August 6 defeating the very talented and multiple stakes-placed colt in Embassy (I Am Invincible).

Autumn Glow is a daughter of Arrowfield Stud’s promising stallion The Autumn Sun and is out of the Var (USA) mare Via Africa (USA). She was a very talented sprinting racemare winning ten times in South Africa including at Group 1 level three-times.

Via Africa has made a mark as a broodmare leaving two winners including In The Congo, who now stands at Newgate Stud Farm. As a racehorse he was the victor in the G1 Golden Rose and the G2 San Domenico S., and managed placings in the G2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint S., G2 Run To The Rose, G3 Sydney S., Listed Rosebud H., and the G1 Galaxy H. Her other runner to race is the classy Hong Kong sprinter Pleasant Endeavor (Redoute’s Choice) who has been the victor in six races over sprinting distances.

Via Africa has unfortunately not produced a live-foal since producing Autumn Glow, but her five-year-old daughter Protea (Vancouver) was unraced, but is now breeding and is due to foal to Dundeel (NZ) in September.

Autumn Glow was originally purchased for $600,000 by Silverdale Farm/Shrone Bloodstock from the draft of Newhaven Park at the 2022 Gold Coast Magic Millions National Weanling Sale and was then a very successful pin-hook when being sold for $1,800,000 from the draft of Silverdale Farm to Arrowfield Pastoral/Hermitage Thoroughbreds at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Imperial Force, 3-year-old colt (Snitzel x Ultimate Fever {Gold Fever {USA}})

The Chris Waller-trained Snitzel colt Imperial Force will have his fourth start at Rosehill on Saturday over 1300 metres after winning well at his second start over 1250 metres at Canterbury on April 17 defeating Monte Veebee (Snitzel). After failing at start number three, he had a break and trialled at Warwick Farm on July 26 in preparation for this first-up three-year-old assignment.

This colt is bred on a pattern that is already proven, Snitzel seems to click well when mated with the Gold Fever (USA) mare Ultimate Fever, she was also handy as a racehorse and was a winner as a juvenile of the Listed Gosford Slipper.

She has been very successful at stud leaving four individual winners including Sprightly Lass (Snitzel) who was victorious in the G3 DC McKay S., and the Listed Bel Esprit S., and Le Cordon Bleu (Snitzel) who won the Listed Canterbury Classic. Other winners are Warmth (Hinchinbrook), Red Hot de Lago (Encosta De Lago) and the non-winning but group-placed Stratosphere who now stands at Grenville Stud in Tasmania.

Imperial Force was a $1,600,000 purchase by Coolmore Australia from the draft of Lime Country Thoroughbreds at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Looking Back

Chicago King (Street Boss {USA}) ran a solid race for second on the Ballarat Synthetic and unfortunately The Ambassador (NZ) (Tarzino {NZ}) was scratched from the same venue.

The Ipswich meeting was unfortunately abandoned, so Half Listening (USA) (Curlin (USA) will have to wait for another day.
