Looking Ahead - August 7

5 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across Australia on Wednesday, including a Lonhro half-brother to the outstanding colt Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}), a Shooting To Win gelding chasing his maiden win at Belmont and a well-bred The Autumn Sun colt debuting at Sandown.

Doomben, Race 2, 1.08pm, AEST, Become a BRC Member Mdn P., $40,000, 1350m

No Brakes, 4-year-old gelding (Lonhro x Speedway {Street Cry {Ire}})

The well-related No Brakes is set to have his second start for Eagle Farm trainer Tony Gollan on the back of a promising fourth placing on debut at Ipswich on July 24 over 1200 metres. On that occasion he was hitting the line strongly late, and the step up in distance looks like it will be of big assistance.

No Brakes is a son of Darley Stud's now pensioned sire Lonhro and is the first live-foal from the Street Cry (Ire) mare Speedway. She had two wins at the mile distance on the track prior to forging a very short but successful broodmare career.

Speedway’s only other living foal is the outstanding colt Broadsiding (Too Darn Hot {GB}) he had a super juvenile season where he was successful in the G1 Champagne S., G1 JJ Atkins S., G2 Sires’ Produce S., and the Listed Fernhill H.

No Brakes second dam is the Redoute’s Choice mare Glissade, she was successful as a juvenile and placed in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude {f}. She then went onto leave the four-time winner Flit (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) who was the victor in the G1 Thousand Guineas, G2 Light Fingers S., and the G3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ S., and the stakes placed six-time winner Flow (Street Cry).

This family is littered with other stakes-performed horses including Steflara (Zabeel {NZ}), Pleiades (Redoute’s Choice), Tropical Squall (Prized Icon), Blue Storm (Bluebird {USA}), Federal (Medaglia D’Oro), Misty Blue (Commands) and Byzance Star (Clear Choice {USA}).

Unfortunately Speedway passed away without producing another live foal after producing Broadsiding.

Belmont, Race 3, 4.24pm, AEST (2.24pm local) Reliable Asset Maintenance Mdn., $25,000, 1400m

On The Mark, 4-year-old gelding (Shooting To Win x Becharm {Sebring})

The Barry Newnham-trained On The Mark will travel to Belmont on Wednesday to have his seventh start over 1400 metres. He is well overdue for a maiden win as he has run in the top 4 in five of his previous starts with the most recent of them being a close-up second at Belmont over 1400 metres on July 27.

This consistent gelding is by Shooting To Win and is the first foal from the Sebring mare Becharm, who was a metropolitan winner over 1300 metres in Adelaide.

The family page is a little quiet up close in regards to stakes horses but On The Mark’s great-grandam is Kapchat (NZ) (Centaine), she was a super mare winning the G1 Winfield C, G2 Laurent Perrier S, and the Listed United Racecourses S.

She has been a super producer and stakes-winners that have descended from her include Kaphero, Princesa (Danehill {USA}), Star Of Giselle (Reset), Starelle (More Than Ready {USA}), Solicit (Street Cry {USA}) and Nayeli (More Than Ready).

Since producing On The Mark, Becharm has produced a two-year-old filly by Pariah, a yearling colt by Anders and was most recently served by Coolmore Stud’s young sire Acrobat last spring.

Sportsbet Sandown Lakeside, Race 2, 1pm, AEST, Tobin Brothers Celebrating Lives Mdn P., $55,000, 1300m

Entrusting, 3-year-old colt (The Autumn Sun x Believe Yourself {Sebring})

The Ben, Will and JD Hayes-trained Entrusting (The Autumn Sun) will travel to Sandown on Wednesday to make his debut over 1300 metres in the hands of jockey Mark Zahra.

Entrusting is the third foal from the talented Sebring mare Believe Yourself, who was a five-time winner on the track in Australia and Singapore. Her wins included the G2 Sweet Embrace S., and placings in the Listed Patrons Bowl, Listed Stewards Cup and fourth placings in the Listed Singapore Guineas, Listed Three Rings Trophy and the G1 Golden Slipper S.

She has had two foals to race and has had two winners, including the three-time winner Autunno (The Autumn Sun) and Citizenship-Swift Ascend (HK) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}).

Other stakes-performers within this family are Good Faith (NZ) (Straight Strike {USA}), Tully Dane, Tavy (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}), Mygoodgrace (Royal Academy {USA}) and What’s New (NZ) (Casino Prince).

Believe Yourself since producing Entrusting has left a two-year-old colt by The Autumn Sun and then has unfortunately missed to The Autumn Sun the last two seasons.

Looking Back

Fair Game (Hellbent) was disappointing running sixth and Miss Xtravaganza (Xtravagant {NZ}) was okay running third only fading late.
