Looking Ahead - July 16

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

At Ballarat, Plea, a juvenile colt by Snitzel, looks to improve after a spell, while at Newcastle, a Deep Field filly from the Eight Carat family has her second start after running third on debut.

Plea, 2-year-old colt (Snitzel x Apologynotaccepted (USA), by Fusaichi Pegasus {USA})

Unplaced on debut back in February, Plea has been freshened up for Tuesday’s meeting at Ballarat and his second race day appearance. Trained by Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans, he is owned by a syndicate which includes Aquis Farm, Kia Ora Stud and Yulong Investments among others.

Sold by Musk Creek Farm at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Plea was purchased by Kia Ora Stud/TFI/Kennewell Racing for $550,000 and he is a son of four-time Champion Sire Snitzel.

Plea is the third foal of group placed winner Apologynotaccepted (USA), whose 3-year-old Goodes (Written Tycoon) is a winner this season. Apologynotaccepted is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Curlin’s Approval (USA) (Curlin {USA}), and we all know how well American mares go when crossed with colonial sprinting stallions like Snitzel.

Flyin’ The Pin, 3-year-old filly (Deep Field x Ultima (NZ), by Zabeel {NZ})

Gilgai Farm’s 3-year-year filly Flyin’ The Pin was third on debut at Goulburn on June 21 for trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes over 1000 metres and the extra furlong should help here.

She is by the retired stallion Deep Field who has 33 stakes winners, and is a homebred for Gilgai Farm.

Flyin’ The Pin is the second foal for winning mare Ultimata (NZ) whose first foal, Super Twenty Three (I Am Invincible) is a winner this season. Ultimata is a full sister to million dollar yearling and G1Arrowfield Stud S. winner Shower Of Roses (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) and a half-sister to the group placed winning Markisa (Danehill {USA}) who is the dam of Listed winner Ocean Jewel (Ocean Park {NZ}), and to the dam of Group 1 winner Hiyaam (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Flyin’ The Pin’s second dam is Group 1 winner Marquise (NZ) (Gold And Ivory {USA}), a half-sister to four Group 1 winners being Octagonal (NZ), Diamond Lover, Kaapstad (NZ), and Mouawad (NZ) who all out of legendary blue hen mare Eight Carat.

Flyin’ The Pin is also nominated for Sydney on Wednesday.
