Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Close relative to Champion Sire I Am Invincible, Convertor (Snitzel) has his second start at Townsville after placing on debut, while at Grafton, Cannon (Written Tycoon) aims for four in succession.
Grafton, Race 5, 1:45pm, AEST, Belflyer Prelude H., $30,000, 1120m
Cannon, 4-year-old gelding (Written Tycoon x Tuscan Sling {Danehill Dancer {Ire}})
Since moving to the stable of Greg Howells, Cannon has had four starts for three wins and a second, with all three wins coming in succession. He returns from a spell at Grafton on Sunday to shoot for four in a row.
Withdrawn as a yearling, he debuted in the Listed VRC Foundation P, then picked up two placings at Sale at his next two starts. He mixed his form in his next five starts, with his best being a couple of fourth placings, before he was flicked on by his owners at an Inglis October digital sale for $11,000.
His new connections have found the trick with him, and he’s looking like living up to his pedigree now. By Champion Sire Written Tycoon, Cannon is second foal of dual Group 3 winner Tuscan Sling (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) who won seven races. Her first three foals are all winners with Cannon’s year younger full sister Tuscan Storey breaking her maiden recently. Tuscan Sling is out of Listed winner Firenza (Kenny’s Best Pal) and he is closely related to Group 3 winner Written Beauty (Written Tycoon).
Townsville, Race 2, 12:12pm, AEST, QTIS Maiden H., $23,000, 1200m
Convertor, 3-year-old colt (Snitzel x Marielle {Lonhro})
Bred by Gainsborough Lodge in Queensland, 3-year-old colt Convertor ran second on debut and heads to Townsville for his second raceday appearance for trainer Georgie Holt.
He has a stallion’s pedigree being by Champion Sire Snitzel out of a winning half-sister to Champion Sire I Am Invincible. His dam, Marielle (Lonhro), was a winner on debut and at stud, her three foals to race include two winners as well as Convertor who placed on debut.
As well as I Am Invincible, this is the family of Group 1 winner Diamond Drille and Group 2 winner and sire O’Lonhro.
Convertor was put through the Inglis December digital sale as a yearling where T Lines picked him up for only $37,500 which seems a bargain if he can win a race with his pedigree and still being a colt.
