Saturday preview: six things to keep an eye on

9 min read
The season's final Group 1 race - the Tattersall's Tiara for the girls - takes place at Eagle Farm on Saturday with a strong support card in place. There is also black-type action for the juveniles in Adelaide and for the older horses in Sydney.

Despite again drawing barrier 17 as she did when an oh so gallant G1 Stradbroke H. second, Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai) goes around in this feature - the final Group 1 for the season - as favourite.

It would a deserved elite level success for the outstanding 6-year-old who has done such a great job winning eight races (and filling placings on a further 23 occasions), amassing over $10.5 million in stakes.

Roots (Press Statement) looks to go one better having been a game runner-up to Palaisipan (So You Think {NZ}) in this same race last year, one which was also contested by this year's runners Opal Ridge (Rubick) and Comrade Rosa (Capitalist) - both within a couple of lengths of the winner finishing fifth and eighth.

C'est Magique (Zoustar) is one of the up-and-comers of the field coming off a smart win in the G2 Dane Ripper S. at her first run for the Waller stable who have won this race twice - in 2019 with Invincibella (I Am Invincible) and in 2013 with Red Tracer (Dane Shadow).

“Despite again drawing barrier 17... Bella Nipotina goes around in this feature - the final Group 1 for the season - as favourite.”

Waller also saddles up Roots as well as Vienna Princess (Snitzel). First run as a Listed race in 1992 and as a Group 3 contest from 1996 to 2005 and once as a Group 2, the Tattersall's Tiara was upgraded to its current Group 1 status in 2007.

G3 Tattersall's Cup - Group 1 form from around the globe

Last year's winner Luncies (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) may not be taking his place again but there is a familiar feel to this year's field with three of last year's seven runners having a second crack at this 2400 metres feature.

“Last year's winner Luncies may not be taking his place again but there is a familiar feel to this year's field with three of last year's seven runners having a second crack at this 2400 metres feature.”

Third up when a game second last year, Spirit Ridge (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) has one more run under his belt this time around whilst Young Werther (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) is third up as he was last year when finishing third. And the fifth home London Banker (NZ) (Tavistock) is also at the same stage of his preparation.

Adding interest to this year's running are three very different Group 1 winners and an exciting up-and-comer.

The 2019 G1 Melbourne Cup hero Vow And Declare (Declaration Of War {USA}) is seeking his first win - off consistent form - since the 2022 G2 Zipping Classic whilst the 2020 G1 Epsom Derby winner Serpentine (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) vies for a fourth Australian success. And El Bodegon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) his first local win having taken out the 2021 G1 Criterium de Saint Cloud.

Vow And Declare | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

As the winner of five of his 16 starts and so game when second at huge odds in the G2 Q22, Knight's Choice (Extreme Choice) is the one with the upside - last year's G3 Winx Guineas winner always well regarded by his trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon.

G3 WJ Healy Stakes - local history for Prince Of Boom?

A race with some very talented and popular horses on its honour roll - such as Aquanita, Samson (Nilo {GB}), Tiny's Finito (Blue's Finito) and Hay List (Statue Of Liberty {USA}) - this 1200-metre dash has never been won by the same horse twice.

Which means that topweight Prince Of Boom (Spirit Of Boom) is out to create a bit of local history having been tough from a wide gate under 60kg in this same race last year.

He has that same weight again and has drawn out even wider but Tim Clark is back aboard and he comes off a forgivable G1 Stradbroke run where he went out too hard - breaking 11 seconds in two 200-metre splits.

Prince Of Boom | Image courtesy of Michael McInally

Also, by Eureka Stud's oh so consistent Spirit Of Boom is the talented and honest All That Pizzazz (Spirit Of Boom) who strips hard fit having been close up at all three of his assignments this time in.

Iowna Merc (Winning Rupert) is another racing well whilst Shooting For Gold (Shooting To Win) boasts a good second up record and was good to the line without the best of luck when resuming in the Listed Lightning. King Kapa (Capitalist) also comes off a good run in that race whilst Tashi (Sebring) was a strong finisher in the Listed Takeover Target S.

There are varied form lines in this race - its contestants having had their latest runs in eight different stakes races.

Listed Tattersall's Stakes - promising juveniles

The second race on a strong programme is this 1400-metre contest for 2-year-olds, a race run since 2001 which on nine occasions has been won by horses who have gone on to enjoy further stakes race success.

Such as the dual Group 1 winner Sirmione (Encosta De Lago), the durable Youthful Jack (Youthful Legs {USA}), the G1 The Galaxy winner Shellscrape and the Group winners Our Sweet Moss (Mossman), Mahisara, Enquare (Stratum) and Cellarman (Mossman).

All ten of the youngsters lining up for this year's edition are already winners though just two already have black-type - Depth Of Character (Deep Field) finishing off well when third in the Listed Oxlade S. at only his second outing whilst Miss Trustful (Dubious) boxed on gamely to finish a close up third in the Listed Phoenix S.

Depth Of Character as a yearling | Image courtesy of Magic Millions

Steel Strike (Exceed And Excel) is one of the three last start winners having showed good heart at Canterbury at his second start - fighting back after being headed.

Heinous (Brutal {NZ}) has drawn a better gate than he did when ending up too far back in the Oxlade in which he was good to the line whilst Julieta (Menari) caught the eye charging home late after finding trouble in running at the Sunshine Coast.

Heinous and Miss Trustful are two of the three representatives of a first season sire, the other being the last start all the way Canterbury winner Mali (Yes Yes Yes).

Listed Tattersall's Gold Crown - bold mares

Deny Knowledge (Ire) (Pride Of Dubai) is an interesting runner here, the dual Group winner having her first start for the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable having been purchased by Yulong for $500,000 at the recent Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

The former Michael Kent trained mare - renowned for her free running style reminiscent of fellow classy Pride Of Dubai mare Pride Of Jenni - tends to race below her best on rain affected going so connections will be keeping an eye on the weather.

Deny Knowledge | Image courtesy of Racing Photos

Whilst she has been racing at this distance (2100 metres) range, Thalassophile (Not A Single Doubt) is up in trip but has been racing as though looking for more ground - finishing off nicely along the rails (which was not really the place to be that day) when a close up sixth off a slow start in the Magic Millions National Classic.

Princess Rhaenys (Iffraaj {GB}) is also up in distance and is coming along nicely, finishing fourth in Group 3 race when not in quite the right part of the track before covering ground and still proving too strong for her rivals at Eagle Farm three weeks ago.

“Deny Knowledge... the dual Group winner having her first start for the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable having been purchased by Yulong for $500,000 at the recent Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.”

Awesome Wonder (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) doesn't know how to run a bad race, Ella's World (The Autumn Sun) is lightly raced and promising whilst Extraordinaire (Fr) (Intello {Ger}) has drawn better than she did when getting too far back in the G3 Gunsynd S.

Listed Oaklands Plate - future stars?

A 2-year-old contest with a history going back to the 1930s, this race has traditionally been a good pointer to future stakes success - won by a number of nice horses who have gone on to even bigger and better things.

Such as the wonderful galloper Comic Court or the outstanding filly Proud Miss (Orgoglio {GB}) - this race the eighth of her historic ten race winning streak in 1961.

The G1 Golden Slipper winner Pago Pago won this race when it was run earlier in the year and a number of its winners have gone on to South Australian Classic success - including last year's winner Coco Sun (The Autumn Sun) who won this race at her second start - at her most recent outing defeating subsequent runaway G1 Queensland Derby winner Warmonger (NZ) (War Decree {USA}) in the G1 South Australian Derby.

“A 2-year-old contest with a history going back to the 1930s, this race has traditionally been a good pointer to future stakes success - won by a number of nice horses who have gone on to even bigger and better things.”

In doing so she became the fifth Oaklands Plate winner to win the Derby - the others being Jovial Scot (Dasford {GB}), Pandie Star (Star Of Baroda {GB}), Waxwings (Curialis {GB}) and Near Boy.

And there has been Oaks' successes too - the G1 South Australian Oaks winners Wine Lover (Neapolitan {GB}) and Te Parae (NZ) (Agricola {GB}) won this race as did the G1 Australasian Oaks winner Tully Thunder (Thunder Gulch {USA}).

As did other subsequent Group 1 winners Comedy Prince (Powerscourt), Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt), Credit Account (NZ) (Imposing) and Out Of Danger (Atilla {GB}).

Coco Sun was last year's winner of the Listed Oaklands Plate

Tony McEvoy, along with his son Calvin, won this last year with Coco Sun and the stable boasts a good record in the race - also taking out the 2021 edition with Mac 'N' Cheese (Sebring), the 2019 running with Westport (Not A Single Doubt) and the previous year's race with Unfair Dismissal (All Too Hard) - as well as cheering home Crevette (Danehill {USA) in 2005,

Showing plenty of fight when taking out the Swan Hill carnival's juvenile feature - the Elvstroem Classic was Cavity Bay (Cable Bay {Ire}) who looks a nice chance to add another Oaklands trophy to the McEvoy cabinet.

Also coming of nice wins are Colmar (Strasbourg), Big Brute (Brutal {NZ}), Don't Russia (Russian Revolution) and Lovey (Spirit Of Boom) whilst Dancing Storm (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and Omanyala (Written Tycoon) are also showing good promise.

Well-calculated gamble set to pay dividends for Racing South Australia

7 min read
In Saturday's edition of The Thoroughbred Report, TTR AusNZ chatted with Racing South Australia's Racing Operations Manager, Greg Rudolph, to discuss the reasoning behind moving the G3 Sires' Produce Stakes from its traditional May time slot to 20 July. This change is part of Racing SA's recent review into 2-year-old programming.

After a review of its programming for 2-year-olds and receiving feedback from trainers, participants, and other racing bodies such as Racing Victoria, Racing SA decided to move the G3 Sires’ Produce Stakes as part of the restructured Adelaide Racing Carnival 2-year-old program.

The G3 Sires’ Produce Stakes, won by the progressive Air Assault (Justify {USA}) in May last year after the horse contested the G3 Breeders’ Stakes over 1200 metres, will now be held on Saturday, 20 July. Saturday’s 1400-metre Listed Oaklands Plate will provide a perfect platform leading into the race.

Racing SA Operations Manager Greg Rudolph explained to TTR AusNZ, “I came across to South Australia three years ago and was initially with the stewards panel. However, for the last two years, I’ve been the head of racing and we’ve just done some tweaking to the programming in South Australia.

“It has been working really well. There are a lot of horses around because even our midweeks are strong as well. We’ve got 200 nominations for Murray Bridge next Wednesday (nine races) and nine races at Gawler.

“But we just wanted to review and amend our 2-year-old program, making it work towards the back end of the season where our feedback indicated these 2-year-olds were a little bit slower to develop. It would be more advantageous to pull the Sires’ Produce out of the April/May carnival and work it so that there’s a proper lead-up for it.

“We just wanted to review and amend our 2-year-old program... Our feedback indicated these 2-year-olds were a little bit slower to develop. It would be more advantageous to pull the Sires’ Produce out of the April/May.” - Greg Rudolph

“The Oaklands Plate sat by itself in July, and when I got here, I thought that just didn’t look right. Now, with the Sires’ Produce being moved to July, at least we’ve given the 2-year-olds some sort of flow in the program and a pattern where there are two black-type races towards the end of the season. This will also provide a good springboard into the spring for South Australian horses competing locally or in Melbourne.”

Form franked

With the strength of Saturday’s Listed Oaklands Plate acceptances, featuring a full field of 14, including several emergencies and a strong blend of local and interstate trainers, Rudolph feels the change has been vindicated. He expects the G3 Sires’ Produce S. to follow suit with similar enthusiasm.

Rudolph was also keen to remind people that the Listed Oaklands Plate was won by Coco Sun (The Autumn Sun) last year, who went on to win the G1 South Australian Derby. The G1 Robert Sangster S. victress, Instant Celebrity (Not A Single Doubt), also won the Listed feature.

Other notable winners include Precious Lorraine (Encosta De Lago), who later won the G3 SA Fillies Classic and became a stakes-producing dam of Meuse (Snitzel), who won the Listed Laelia S. in South Australia. Crevette (Danehill {USA}) is also on the honour roll of the G3 Oaklands Plate and found fame as the dam of the dual Group 1 winner Cosmic Endeavour (Northern Meteor).

Greg Rudolph

“I think it’s a race on plenty of radars. We’ve got interstate acceptances from the Victorian trainers. Probably a bit of a stretch for the New South Wales-based trainers to come across, but we certainly had good representation from them during April and May.

“The focus at this time of year tends to be on Brisbane. However, at least there will be some focus on South Australia with some end-of-season black-type racing. It also gives South Australia another point of difference: having the last black-type 2-year-old race of the season is something unique to this state.

“But the Oaklands Plate is a good race. The form has previously held up and produced some good horses, such as Coco Sun coming back and winning the South Australian Derby, and horses like Instant Celebrity.

“But the Oaklands Plate is a good race. The form has previously held up and produced some good horses, such as Coco Sun coming back and winning the South Australian Derby, and horses like Instant Celebrity.”

“I think the Sires’ Produce Stakes will now be a likely target, and I think the size of that field will show that in a few weeks.”

On potential disadvantages of changing the time slot of the G3 Sires’ Produce S., Rudolph said, “The weather is always a factor here. We’re normally on wet tracks in July, but that suits some later-developing 2-year-olds as well, and it also exposes them to the conditions because they’re going to encounter one of those tracks sooner or later.”

Trainer approach changed

Another factor that has facilitated the Sires’ Produce S. time slot change is a different approach from trainers in terms of programming their 2-year-olds.

“Trainers have changed and adapted their methods. The criticism was, ‘Well, we can’t turn a horse around in the spring with a 2-year-old race in July,’ but you actually can. You can back off them or get a few late winter runs into them, and there’s residual fitness for the spring.”

Although held for the sprinters, the winter program also includes the Listed Lightning S., open to two- and 3-year-olds. The event has been won by the Champion Sprinter Nature Strip (Nicconi), who defeated a then 2-year-old Sunlight (Zoustar), who won the G1 Coolmore Stud S. that spring.

Other notable winners include the Group 1 winner Viddora (I Am Invincible), the classy sprinters Wild Rain (Manhattan Rain), and Avoid Lightning (Blevic).

“It’s a signature race for good horses, and the 2-year-old element does give it some interest at the back end of the season. Again, it’s just about trainers adapting their approach and keeping horses they have earmarked for the race fresh for sprinting.

“But overall, our approach and decision were based on the fact that the G3 Sires’ Produce S. being in May didn’t fit the 2-year-old program and didn’t fit the Adelaide Racing Carnival. You had two sets of 2-year-olds: the sprinters coming through the Without Fear S. and into races like the Breeders' and the David Coles. So, there were three sprint 2-year-old races, and then you had the Sires’ sitting there as a 1400-metre race, so it was a different set of horses and historically the field size varied.

“The criticism was, ‘Well, we can’t turn a horse around in the spring with a 2-year-old race in July,’ but you actually can. You can back off them or get a few late winter runs into them, and there’s residual fitness for the spring.” - Greg Rudolph

“With the Sportsbet sponsorship of racing in South Australia, it has been a real boost to the carnival itself. Our role is to look at the schedule as a whole and see where we could make it better. The Oaklands Plate, which historically sat by itself, looked like it could be bolstered, and the field size could make it a better race day.

“We received feedback from local and interstate trainers who were on board, and it’s all been validated by tomorrow's field. We also worked with Racing Victoria. We looked at their program, and they have a meeting at Flemington on 20 July with a 1000-metre 2-year-old sprint race and the Byerley, which is an 1800-metre race and a bit of a lead-up to the Derby.

“Those late-season 2-year-olds can have a crack over a trip, but we in South Australia can hit that sweet spot in the middle. I think we will get horses from Victoria that don’t go for the 1800 metres or aren’t sprinters.

“It’s a gamble, but it’s a well-calculated one, giving us something different and a little ray of hope going into the spring.”

Trial Report: Candlewick scorches the Randwick turf

9 min read
Friday morning's trials at Randwick encountered some difficulties with technical issues, delaying the official results. However, the show went on, featuring some interesting winners and runners throughout the program.

Cover image courtesy of Ashlea Brennan

Friday morning’s 18 trials at Randwick took place under sunny conditions, despite a crisp 12 degrees and a technical issue with the camera slowing the flow of results. Additionally, the last two heats on the polytrack were abandoned.

Heat 1 at Randwick, over 1200 metres, saw Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott field four of the ten runners, while Annabel Neasham was represented by two. The trial was won by the John Thompson-trained With Your Blessing (NZ) (Vadamos {Fr}).

Finishing behind, With Your Blessing was Matthew Smith’s Kingman (GB) gelding Colour Sergeant (Ire) and Surf Dancer (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) from the Waterhouse and Bott stable.

Attracting some intrigue was John O’Shea’s unraced Sea Strike (GB), a 3-year-old gelding by the Champion runner Sea The Stars (Ire). This Champion Thoroughbred's colour bearer has had relatively quiet trials and made little impression on Friday but is likely one to improve over longer trips.

Sea Strike is out of the Listed-placed Invincible Spirit (Ire) mare Herecomesthesun (Ire), who hails from the family of Hong Kong’s champion and G1 Cox Plate victor Romantic Warrior (GB) (Acclamation {Ire}) and the Group 1 victress Folk Opera (Ire) (Singspiel {Ire}). Sea Strike was purchased for 100,000gns (AU$199,600) at the 2022 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale by Brian Grassick Bloodstock.

Later in the program, O’Shea was represented by another unraced 3-year-old gelding, Yorkshire, a son of Snitzel, in Heat 10. Ridden by Jason Collett, Yorkshire won from the once-raced Zouripper (Zoustar). Yorkshire is the first foal from Chanteline (USA), a daughter of Majesticperfection (USA), who won nine races, including the G3 Franklin County S. at Keeneland and several Listed races in North America.

“Later in the program, O’Shea was represented by another unraced 3-year-old gelding, Yorkshire, a son of Snitzel, in Heat 10. Ridden by Jason Collett, Yorkshire won from the once-raced Zouripper.”

The son of Snitzel was a $575,000 purchase by PR Funds from the draft of Newgate Farm at the 2022 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Chanteline’s half-sister by Exceed And Excel was purchased by Hollymount Stud for $125,000 at this year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Snowden stable dominate

Following the announcement on Thursday that Peter and Paul Snowden's training partnership will cease at the end of the season, the pair celebrated several winners on Friday morning. Beginning with Xidaki (Zoustar) in Heat 2, Kadall (Capitalist) in Heat 3, and Lavish Empire (Spieth {NZ}) in Heat 4, the successes continued.

The pair were then represented by Kingdom Undersiege (I Am Invincible) in Heat 6. The $800,000 colt was unplaced at Randwick and Newcastle in February and March of this year but has won his last two trials after a 14-week let-up.

Ridden by Tommy Berry, the son of I Am Invincible was a dominant 2.08l winner in the 1050-metre heat from Mougenot (I Am Invincible) and Satin Shimmer, also by Yarraman Park Stud’s Champion Sire. Kingdom Undersiege was presented by Yarraman Park Stud at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where China Horse Club, Newgate, Go, and Trilogy teamed up to secure him for $800,000.

The colt is from the Choisir mare Rose Of Choice, who won seven races, including the Listed Jungle Dawn Classic.

Snowden’s unraced colt Cash And Cards (Written Tycoon) showed significant improvement from his three previous trial outings on Friday morning in Heat 8. Stepping up to 1050 metres for the first time, after previously racing over 740 metres twice and 800 metres once, he displayed progress.

In a field of ten, with the 2-year-olds spread across the track, Cash And Cards, ridden by Chad Schofield, hit the front in the straight. It was not until the last 75 metres that the colt truly stretched away from his opposition, running through the line strongly. Following him was Idle Flyer (Dundeel {NZ}), who was the best of the closers, while Trunk (Snitzel) held on for third.

Cash And Cards was a $240,000 purchase by Yulong from the draft of Newhaven Park at the 2023 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He is the first foal from the winning Foxwedge mare Zorro Rapido, who is a full sister to Volpe Veloce, a 12-time winner, including the G1 Railway S., the G2 Eight Carat Classic, and the G2 Westbury Classic. Additionally, Zorro Rapido is a full sister to the Listed winner Raposa Rapida and a half-sister to the G3 Black Opal S. winner Delago Bolt (Delago Brom).

They are from the Barathea (Ire) mare Bardego, who won the G3 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) and the Listed Maribyrnong Trial S.

Mojo storms to success

Toronado’s (Ire) Call Me Mojo was a visually impressive winner of Heat 5 over 1050 metres. Yulong’s Step Quick (Alabama Express) and the Waterhouse and Bott-trained Divine Existence (Cosmic Force) looked set to fight out the contest after trading blows early.

Upon entering the straight, Divine Existence gained an advantage over a tiring Step Quick. However, as soon as that filly found the front, David Pfieffer’s Call Me Mojo streamed down the outside and won by 2.66l from Piccaderro (Pierro), who also made ground. Following in third and fourth were Sakima (Snitzel) and Whispering Away (Lonhro), while Divine Existence finished fifth.

Call Me Mojo is the second foal from the Greenwood Lake (USA) mare Mojo Moon, who won twice over 1850 and 2000 metres. She is a half-sister to the tough Testashadow (Testa Rossa), an eight-time winner of over $1 million in prize money, with victories including the G3 Festival S. and the R. Listed Magic Millions Cup.

The son of Swettenham Stud’s sire sensation, Toronado, was a $400,000 purchase by Anton Koolman Bloodstock from the draft of Collingrove Stud at the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Ciaron Maher’s Piccaderro is the third foal from Piccadillies, a daughter of Uncle Mo (USA) and a half-sister to the Champion Fastnet Rock. Piccadillies was a $200,000 purchase by Dynamic Syndications and Dean Watt Bloodstock from the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Twirling over Dawn

Twirling (I Am Invincible) continued Team Snowden's fantastic form in Heat 7 when the unraced filly held a narrow margin over the fellow unraced Dawn Service (Justify {USA}), who is also the first foal from the Champion Filly Sunlight (Zoustar).

In a field featuring several glittering pedigrees, the Waterhouse and Bott-trained Fabulism (Written Tycoon) did not make an impression on Friday but is the first foal from the Frankel (GB) mare Miss Fabulass. She is a daughter of Samantha Miss (Redoute’s Choice). Miss Fabulass won the G2 Tea Rose S and the Listed Tatt’s QLD Spirit Of Boom Fillies and Mares Classic.

Twirling, bred and raced by Belinda Bateman, is the fifth foal from the Lonhro mare Twirl, who is also the dam of the earlier winner Kadall. Twirl was placed in the G2 Sweet Embrace S. and the G3 Widden S. as a 2-year-old. She comes from the family of this season’s Group 3-placed juvenile Anode (I Am Invincible) and the Group 2 and Group 1-placed Lightsaber.

Winx relation second

Ten years to the day after Winx (Street Cry {Ire}) had her second start at Rosehill in a 1400-metre 2-year-old race, her half-sister Wings Of Desire (Pride Of Dubai) was placed in Heat 12 over 738 metres.

The Michael Freedman-trained 2-year-old filly improved on her first outing at the trials in February, where she was unplaced behind the classy Too Darn Lizzie (Too Darn Hot {GB}). Heat 12 was won by Ron Quinton’s Are EE Que (Sidestep), who is still a four-start maiden.

The legendary Winx | Image courtesy of The Image Is Everything

Heat 12 also marked the return of Catonahotinroof (Too Darn Hot {GB}), a daughter of the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy (Fastnet Rock).

Wings Of Desire is the final foal from the remarkable Vegas Showgirl (NZ) (Al Akbar), who passed away in October last year.

Blueblood whips rivals

It looked like a sit-and-steer job for Tommy Berry aboard the John O’Shea-trained Candlewick (Pierro) in Heat 13 over 740 metres. The filly was a 0.69l winner from Bellarata, a daughter of Pierro’s son Pierata and the dam Bellevue Girl (Encosta De Lago), who also produced Pierro’s Listed winner Bellevue Hill. Meanwhile, Godolphin’s well-related Silmarillion (Too Darn Hot {GB}) finished third. Silmarillion is a half-sister to the 'cult horse' Kementari (Lonhro) and the Listed winner Telperion.

Pierro | Standing at Coolmore

Candlewick, bred by Wallings Bloodstock and retained by Tyreel Stud, is the sixth foal from the brilliant producer Pinocchio (Encosta De Lago). Although Pinocchio won only once over 1200 metres, she has found fame as a broodmare, producing The Everest winner Classique Legend (Not A Single Doubt), with whom Candlewick shares her striking grey coat. Additionally, Pinocchio is the dam of the G2 Hong Kong Jockey Club Sprint winner Aethero (Sebring) and the recent winner I Am Famous (I Am Invincible).

Double for Capitalist

Newgate Farm’s G1 Golden Slipper victor Capitalist sired two juvenile heat winners on Friday morning.

In Heat 14, the Waterhouse and Bott-trained Enter The Dragon, ridden by Regan Bayliss, emerged victorious. He defeated his stablemates Johnny The Kid (Trapeze Artist) and Stormbringer (Pride Of Dubai). King Of Thunder (NZ) (Tivaci) caught the eye by making up ground on the inside between horses to finish fourth.

Enter The Dragon, a sales veteran, was initially sold by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds to Ricky Yiu for $260,000 at the 2023 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. He was reoffered by Kingstar Farm at the 2023 Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale, where Darby Racing paid $280,000.

The gelding, already a winner, is the first foal from the well-related Sebring mare Princess Joy Joy, a blood sister to star runner Criterion (NZ) and from the family of stakes winners Najoom (Northern Meteor) and Bhutane Dane (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

Capitalist’s second winner came courtesy of the Waterhouse and Bott stable again, with Comme Ci Comme Ca. The unraced gelding was an impressive 1l winner over his stablemate Conchiero (Pierata) and the well-performed Getafix (Calyx {GB}), who made strong ground. The Michael Freedman-trained Balmoral (Royal Meeting {Ire}) also caught the eye, going to the line under minimal riding in Heat 15.

Comme Ci Comme Ca, bred by Twin Palms Stud, was presented by Milburn Creek at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, where Gai Waterhouse, Adrian Bott, and Kestrel Thoroughbreds secured him for $200,000. He is the second foal from the dual winner Chain Of Fools (More Than Ready {USA}), who was fourth in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas. She is a daughter of the Catbird mare Burgeis, who won twice, including the Listed Proud Miss S., and was third in the G1 Blue Diamond S.

Furthermore, Comme Ci Comme Ca is from the family of Stratum, a Champion 2-Year-Old Colt and winner of the G1 Golden Slipper, alongside the Group 3 victress Dystopia (Redoute’s Choice).

Shinn to replace McDonald in Tatt’s Tiara

Jockey Blake Shinn will replace James McDonald aboard Chris Waller-trained second favourite C’Est Magique (Zoustar) in the G1 Tatt’s Tiara.

Shinn was booked to ride the Mike Moroney-trained Coeur Volante (NZ) (Proisir) but connections opted to scratch the mare after drawing barrier 16.

Decent draw for Roll On High

3-year-old filly Roll On High (Shamus Award) has drawn barrier four ahead of Saturday's G1 Tatt's Tiara at Eagle Farm. “It's weird. She never draws a good gate. One day she drew barrier 4 and another 6, but for the rest of her career she's drawn out,” syndicator Rob Slade told Racing.com.

She was unplaced in the G1 Stradbroke H. last start, and won the G3 Fred Best, the start prior.

Trainer Adam Campton hopes Deepour (Exosphere) will be his first stakes winner in the G3 Healy S. at Eagle Farm on Saturday. “He’s going as good as last year and I want to get him out to 1400 metres eventually, possibly in Sydney towards the end of his campaign,” Campton told Racingqueensland.com.au.

“Long range, I’d like to aim him for the Stradbroke next year, but he needs to get his rating up.”

Colmar ready for Listed Oaklands Plate

Ron Daniel’s punt on an injured yearling has already paid handsome dividends and his hardy 2-year-old Colmar (Strasbourg) can further vindicate the trainer’s faith in Saturday’s Listed Oaklands Plate at Morphettville. “He was meant to go through the Premier Sale in Melbourne but unfortunately got injured the night before he was due in the ring,” Daniel told Racing.com.

“He was withdrawn from there and we got the vet to go through all the x-rays on him and check it out and we bought him privately after that.” Colmar has won two of seven starts.

Price-Kent and Schofield team up for Listed race

Jockey Chad Schofield is looking to add a second stakes victory for the Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr stable in as many months when he rides Golden Path (NZ) (Belardo {Ire}) in the Listed WJ McKell Cup at Rosehill on Saturday. “I rode a fair bit for Mick as an apprentice in Melbourne, I won on Lankan Rupee for him along with other good races,” Schofield told Racingnsw.com.au.

“He’s always been supportive of me and since he’s been travelling horses here, he’s been keen to have me on and it’s been much appreciated. We’ve struck really well, and we’ve got a good record together. They’re really good trainers and they’ve been very good at selecting the right horses to bring.” Golden Path is a last start winner who has won three of his ten starts.

Seydoux returns to Victoria

After being purchased for $25,000 at a digital auction with the aim of winning a couple in Tasmania, Seydoux (Xtravagant {NZ}) now has won 10 of her 15 starts for new trainer Adam Trinder and will head to Caulfield on Saturday. “Jack had been studying the Victorian form and thought she'd been running in pretty strong maidens,” part-owner Graeme Schaeche told Racing.com.

“I looked at the pedigree - Miss Pennymoney (winner of the 2000 G1 Newmarket H.) was her granddam and Bold Promise (second in the G1 Flight S.) was her great granddam. That was a better pedigree than anything I've had, so we bid $15,000 and she was passed in … we called them up, they wanted $25,000 plus GST, so we paid that. I bought her sight unseen, no vet checks, but Adam was great, he called Jim and he said she had the ability to win a race in Tasmania.”

Stakes aims for Deep Field filly

Trainer Tom Dabernig has stakes ambitions for his filly Whistlefield (Deep Field) who will line up at Caulfield this Saturday. “Meech has got a good record on her, she's got a light weight and a good gate, so she should run well,” Dabernig told racing.com.

She will head to the Listed Lightning S. at Morphettville on July 27 next.

Debutant juvenile winner for Written Tycoon

Yulong owned 2-year-old colt Judicial (Written Tycoon) won on debut at Ballarat on Friday for trainers Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, and jockey Luke Nolen, winning by 2.25l. Yulong purchased him for $260,000 from Vinery Stud’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale draft.

A half-brother to Listed winner Happy Go Plucky (Pluck {USA}), Judicial’s dam Dirty (Hussonet {USA}) is a Listed winning half-sister to Listed winners Whitlam (Elusive Quality {USA}) and Etymology (New Approach {Ire}).

Treble for Kersley at Ballarat

Jockey Fred Kersley rode a treble at Ballarat on Friday on Mathew Ellerton trained Boys Night Out (No Nay Never {USA}), Lindsey Smith trained Mean Feat (Lean Mean Machine), and Matthew Ellerton trained She’s Xtravagant (Xtravagant {NZ}).

Gavelhouse offer top filly at next online auction

Group 2 winner Llanacord (NZ) (Contributer {Ire}) will be offered to the public through gavelhouse.com’s National Online Breeding Stock Sale, which will go live at 5pm on Friday, June 28. “She has been a wonderful mare for us, she has given us all sorts of thrills,” trainer Stephen Nickalls told Loveracing.nz.

“She has taken us to Australia, she was Group 1 placed and was a Group 2 winner in the Lowland. She has given us a great journey. She is there ready for an early service, and someone will have a lot of fun with her as a broodmare.”

Haunui Farm farewell Group 1 winner Perfect Fit

Group 1 winner Perfect Fit (NZ) (Elusive City {USA}) has died. “Sad day - RIP Perfect Fit. You gave so many of us the thrill of a lifetime racing & breeding a Group One winner. Rest easy big girl,” Haunui Farm said on their Facebook page.

Winner of the 2016 G1 New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ S. Perfect Fit won six of her 18 starts, and as a broodmare her first two foals are both winners, while she has an unraced 3-year-old filly Fittingly (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}), an unraced 2-year-old filly Leica Glove (NZ) (Super Seth) and a weanling filly by Russian Revolution.

Victorian spring for Gentian Blue

Kiwi mare Gentian Blue (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) might head across the Tasman for the Victorian spring. “We’ll see how she goes on Saturday, and we have toyed with the idea of potentially going over to Victoria,” said trainer Maxim Van Lierde, who races the mare with wife Samantha.

“We could maybe run her in a couple of handicaps while her rating is still nice and low. She has obviously got a lot of ability and it’s about placing her right to try and get what we want out of her.” The winner of two of her seven starts ran fifth in the G1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders S. at her last start.

Betfred is new sponsor of Guineas

Betfred will be the new sponsor of Newmarket's 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas from 2025 onwards, it was announced on Thursday. The multi-year agreement means the bookmaker will become the first brand to sponsor all five of Britain's Classics–the others being the Betfred Oaks and Betfred Derby at Epsom and Doncaster's Betfred St Leger–at the same time.

To mark their sponsorship of the prestigious contests, Betfred have also announced that a £2-million bonus will be on offer to connections of any horse who completes the 'Betfred Triple Crown' by winning the 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger. The Triple Crown has been won 15 times, although not since Nijinsky in 1970.

Betfred will also sponsor an additional seven races across the three days of the Betfred Guineas Festival, which next year takes place from May 2-4.

Looking Ahead - June 29

6 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across New Zealand and Australia on Saturday, including a well-bred Yes Yes Yes filly that is bred to be quick, a Deep Field colt looking for Listed success and an expensive $1,100,000 purchase by Snitzel looking to win at Newcastle.

Ruakaka, Race 2, 10.05am, AEST (12.05pm local), Ruakaka NZ’s Best Bet In Winter 2YO SW&P., $35,000, 1100m

Dua Dance (NZ), 2-year-old filly (Yes Yes Yes x Cornerstone {Sebring})

The Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained Dua Dance (NZ) will make her debut over 1100 metres at Ruakaka on Saturday on the back of two very good trials in preparation for this race assignment. She won very impressively at the Waipa trials in October last year where she really caught the eye with her speed. Resuming from a spell, she trialled nicely for second at Rotorua on June 11 behind Pieces Of Eight (NZ) (Ten Sovereigns {Ire}).

Dua Dance is the first foal from the Sebring mare Cornerstone, who was unraced on the track.

Cornerstone's dam Upon This Rock (Fastnet Rock) was a very smart mare winning six times from 1100 metres up to 1600 metres including one as a juvenile. Her stakes wins were in the Listed Starstruck C., and the Listed Dark Jewel C.

This family has so much depth to it further back and other Group-performers in the pedigree include Criterion, Gaze On (Intergaze), Comin’ Through (Fastnet Rock), Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice), Bittercreek (Snitzel), Bull Point, Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock), Charm Stone (I Am Invincible) and Malice (Teofilo {Ire}).

Cornerstone since producing Dua Dance has produced Per Incanto (USA) yearling and weanling fillies and she was served once again by the son of Street Cry (Ire) in Per Incanto last spring.

Dua Dance was a $115,000 purchase by Wexford Stables from the draft of Little Avondale Stud at the 2023 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale.

Newcastle, Race 3, 1.50pm AEDT, Newcastle Bathrooms 2YO H., $42,000, 1300m

Manos, 2-year-old colt (Snitzel x Carry On Alice (SAF) {Captain Al} {SAF})

Newcastle’s Saturday meeting will serve as the venue for the second start for Manos, a regally-bred son of Snitzel from the Peter and Paul Snowden stable at Randwick. At his first start he run a solid fourth at Canterbury on June 10 when he ran on solidly from back in the field behind the promising Steel Strike (Exceed And Excel).

Manos is the third foal out of the talented South African mare Carry On Alice (SAF) (Captain Al {SAF}). She was successful eleven times in South Africa including in five Group 1 races and another two Group races. She has also made a promisng start to her broodmare career leaving Altruist (Snitzel) who has won twice and placed fourth in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (C&G).

Manos grandam Carry On Katie (Western Winter {USA}) was also a talented mare in South Africa, she saluted the judge four times including the G2 Greyville Debutante S., as well as managing eight stakes placings throughout her career.

Carry On Alice since producing Manos, has delivered a Snitzel yearling filly, a The Autumn Sun weanling filly and was most recently served in the spring by Arrowfield Stud’s star stallion Snitzel again.

Manos was a $1,100,000 purchase by China Horse Club/Newgate/Go Bloodstock/Trilogy from the draft of Arrowfield Stud at the 2023 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Eagle Farm, Race 2, 12.18pm, AEST, Listed Impressu Print Group Tattersall’s S., $160,000, 1400m

Depth Of Character, 2-year-old colt (Deep Field x Caricature (NZ) {Power} {GB})

The Annabel Neasham-trained Depth Of Character will attempt to win his first stakes win at start number three at Eagle Farm on Saturday. On debut he won very impressively at Canterbury on May 29 when he charged home from last in running, and at his second start he chased the very good colts home in Megastar Heart (Star Turn) and Embassy (I Am Invincible) in Listed company on the Eagle Farm track.

This well-related colt is the second foal from the Power (GB) mare Caricature (NZ), who was a winner at 1600 metres and placed in the Listed Taranaki RC Oaks Prelude, G3 Lowland S., and was fourth in the G1 New Zealand Oaks. Caricature was a $600,000 purchase by China Horse Club from the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale.

Depth Of Character’s second dam is the Octagonal (NZ) mare Octapussy, she was handy on the track winning six times from 1400 metres up to 2000 metres and managing placings in the G1 Doomben Cup and the G2 Emancipation S. She has thrived as a broodmare leaving eight winners including three stakes winners.

Included in her stakes-winning progeny are Pussy Willow (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) who was the victor in the G2 Wakefield Challenge S., Inside Agent (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA})) who won the Listed Poseidon S., and Pussy O’Reilly (O’Reilly) who won the Listed Manawatu Flying H., she has since left Positivity (NZ) (Almanzor {Fr}) who this season has won the G3 Sunline Vase and the G3 South Australia Fillies C., as well as placing in the G1 New Zealand Oaks.

Other top class black-type winners in the pedigree are Vavasour (NZ) (Redoute’s Choice), Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom {USA}), Dopff (NZ) (Tights {USA}), Zourion (NZ) (Zoustar), Pearl Of Alsace (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) and Celebrity Dream (NZ) (Thorn Park).

Caricature since producing Depth Of Character has delivered a Zoustar weanling filly and was most recently served in the spring by Russian Revolution.

Depth Of Character was a $180,000 purchase at the sales by Annabel Neasham Racing Pty Ltd from the draft of The Chase at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Looking Back:

On the Ballarat Synthetic track Judicial (Written Tycoon) was very impressive winning his race softly on debut, Graceful (Dundeel {NZ}) won very nicely and she looks like she has a big future.

Regina Star (Kingman {GB}) was disappointing in her race finishing ninth.
