Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner early in its career chasing maiden success, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Three exciting runners are set to hit the track across New Zealand and Australia on Saturday, including a well bred Snitzel two-year-old filly looking for stakes success at Ellerslie. While Too Darn Hot (GB) and I Am Invincible two-year-old colts look for maiden success at Mornington and Kembla Grange.
Ellerslie, Race 3, 11.45am AEDT (1.45pm local) Listed TAB Star Way S., $100,000 1200m
Love Poem, 2-year-old filly (Snitzel x Madrigals {Lonhro})
The well-bred Snitzel filly Love Poem is set to have her third start over 1200 metres for trainer Stephen Marsh at Ellerslie. She has placed in both of her starts in Group company behind Captured By Love (Written Tycoon) so she looks well placed in this Listed contest.
Love Poem is out of the Lonhro mare Madrigals . She only raced once but is very well bred being out of a full-sister to the Champion racehorse and successful sire Pierro, he saluted the judge eleven times including in the G1 Golden Slipper S., G1 Sires’ Produce S., G1 Champagne S., G1 Canterbury S., and the G1 George Ryder S.
Adding to her pedigree is the fact Love Poem is a half-sister to one of the current 3-year-old stars in Estriella (I Am Invincible) who has won four races this season including the G3 Peter le Grand S., and the Listed Sunlight C. Another pedigree update could be ahead as she could become a Group 1 performer in Adelaide in the coming weeks.
Madrigals since producing Love Poem has left a weanling colt by The Autumn Sun and was most recently served by Maurice (Jpn) last spring.
Love Poem was a $280,000 purchase by Bruce Perry Bloodstock from the draft of Arrowfield Stud from the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.
Mornington, Race 1, 11.50am AEDT, Asset Painting Services Mornington Sires, $150,000, 1200m
Perspiration, 2-year-old colt (Too Darn Hot {GB} x Latitude {Casino Prince})
Perspiration is a son of Darley Stud’s exciting shuttling sire in Too Darn Hot (GB) and is out of Latitude (Casino Prince). She was a five-time winner on the track and is also a half-sister to Sugar Boom (Spirit Of Boom) who was successful in the Listed Mode P., and Intencion (Commands) who was a three time winner placed in the G3 HDF McNeil S.
It looks like a strong form line for this Ciaron Maher trained colt who at his first start ran well in a strong maiden - finishing second behind the promising colt Roselyn’s Star (Shalaa {Ire}) who was group placed at his subsequent start. To add to his form at Perspiration’s second start he ran on strongly from the back of the field to place behind the unbeaten Super Seth colt Feroce (NZ).
Latitude since producing Perspiration has unfortunately not had a lot of luck, failing to produce a live foal but has been most recently served in the spring by Too Darn Hot again to hopefully produce a full sibling.
Perspiration was a $270,000 purchase by Ciaron Maher Bloodstock/Group 1 Bloodstock FBAAS from the draft of Coolmore Stud from the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
Kembla Grange, Race 1, 12.25pm AEDT, The Warra Club Super 2YO Maiden H., $60,000, 1400m
Media World, 2-year-old colt (Written Tycoon x Meryl {Epaulette})
The well-bred Media World is set to make his second start over 1400 metres for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden at Kembla Grange. In his first campaign he ran a very creditable fifth in Listed company at Caulfield on December 2 over 1000 metres before running a tidy third last start at Newcastle behind the promising Fearless (Pierata).
Media World is a son of Yulong Stud’s star stallion Written Tycoon and is out of the Epaulette mare Meryl. She was a two-time winner at 1200 metres including the G3 BJ McLachlan S., and the G3 Scarborough S. She comes from a solid family being a half-sister to two Listed stakes placegetters in Chosen Idol - Golden Idol (Mac) (Choisir) and Miss Idyllic (Exceed And Excel).
Meryl, since producing Media World, has left a yearling colt by Capitalist, a filly foal by Pierata and was most recently served by Pierro last spring.
Media World was an expensive purchase at the sales costing Yu Long Investments $1,400,000 at the 2023 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale from the draft of Fairview Park Stud.
