Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
At Ballarat on Wednesday, we look at a homebred filly for breeder David Peacock from a two-time stakes-producing mare, while at Hawkesbury, the 2-year-old feature sees debut by a filly whose dam is a half-sister to Shamus Award.
Sportsbet-Ballarat, Race 1, 1.35pm AEST, Whitford Liquid Waste 2YO Mdn, $37,500, 1100m
Another You, 2-year-old filly (Frosted {USA} x Bahamas {Teofilo {Ire}})
This filly is a homebred for South Australian David Peacock, who has had great success with the first dam here, Bahamas. From her he has bred the Group 2 and Listed winner Berkeley Square (Territories {Ire}), along with the Group 3 winner Senor Toba (Toronado {Ire}), who is now in Hong Kong, so this filly is a half-sibling to two stakes winners.
The second dam on this page is St Trinians (Black Hawk {GB}), who was a three-time stakes winner. Bahamas herself is a half-sister to the G2 Matriarch S. winner Affair To Remember (Toronado {Ire}), and also the stakes-placed Exodus (Bernardini {USA}).
Frosted (USA) | Standing at Darley
Another You is trained at Ballarat by Dan O’Sullivan and this will be her debut effort. She has had two jump-outs, in both of which she was fourth, the latest on March 21. The filly will have jockey Patrick Moloney from barrier nine.
Hawkesbury, Race 1, 1.25pm AEST, Blacktown Workers Club Group H., $55,000, 1300m
Razella, 2-year-old filly (Hellbent x Marple Miss {Not A Single Doubt})
This filly is a homebred for popular breeder Bob Hannan, the fourth foal from the Not A Single Doubt mare Marple Miss. The fame on this page comes from the mare being a half-sister to the Cox Plate-winning Rosemont stallion Shamus Award, and also to Tramonto (Wandjina), who was second in the G3 Gold Coast Guineas.
The second dam in this family is Sunset Express (Success Express {USA}), who was an extensive producer. She was the dam of 10 foals, of which eight raced and all were winners. Sunset Express was retired last year and she’s a three-quarter sister to the dam of Shaquero (Shalaa {Ire}).
Hellbent | Standing at Yarraman Park
Two-year-old Razella is trained by Stephen O’Halloran at Hawkesbury. This will be her first race, though she has been trialled well. In her latest effort, she was third on March 20. She will have jockey Rachel King in this field from barrier three.
Looking Back
Our Looking Ahead selections on Tuesday fared okay. At Kembla Grange, Dagon (I Am Invincible) was third, while at Kyneton, Queenbeel (NZ) (Savabeel) was also third.
