Looking Ahead - August 23

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Our Looking Ahead selections for Tuesday are all 3-year-olds making their debut. We kick off at Scone with a Star Turn filly, before heading to Warrnambool with a Sebring gelding. Then, we head back to Scone, where Kim Waugh has a nice Russian Revolution filly stepping out.

Scone, Race 1, 12.50pm AEST, SRC Ladies Day Sept 23 Mdn Plate, $25,000, 900m

Athena Nyx, 3-year-old filly (Star Turn x Night War {General Nediym})

This filly was consigned to the 2021 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, where Prime Thoroughbreds paid $90,000 for her from the Vinery Stud draft.

Her second dam, Samar (Secret Savings {USA}), has thrown dual Group 1 victress Samaready (More Than Ready {USA}) and Group 2 winner Night War (General Nediym). Triple Group 1 hero County Tyrone (Danewin) also hails from this family.

Athena Nyx will be handled by apprentice Bailey Wheeler.

This gelding was bred by Echo Bloodstock and they race him in partnership with others.

Emathion’s second dam, Fragmentation (Snippets), was a Listed winner and has thrown Group 2 winner Shrapnel and Group 1 winner Wanted. Multiple Listed winner Into The Mist (Southern Appeal {USA}) also hails from this family.

Trained by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Emathion hasn’t been seen at the public trials.

He will be ridden by Dean Yendall.

The Kim Waugh-trained filly has looked good in two trials and will be ridden by Andrew Gibbons.

Looking Back

We found a winner on Sunday, with Speak Now (Star Witness) saluting by 2.5l at Sale. Amberina (Lonhro) was unplaced at Nowra, while Regimental Music (NZ) (More Than Ready {USA}) didn’t run at Muswellbrook as the meeting was abandoned.
