Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we like the winning chances at Wagga of a youngster who performed well on debut and at Terang we’re siding with a well-bred filly making her first appearance and a 3-year-old who drew attention to her chances with a solid first-up performance.
Wagga, Race 2, 1.35pm AEST, Prized Icon 2YO H., $30,000, 1200m
Bowie Of Dubai (Pride Of Dubai) made an encouraging start to his career when he came off a Warwick Farm trial win to finish third at Moruya. He started at short odds there and did well after drawing the outside gate and from a much better barrier (five) here should prove hard to roll.
Bowie Of Dubai as a weanling
Trained by Robert and Luke Price, Bowie Of Dubai was bred by the China Horse Club and was bought out of Sledmere Stud’s Inglis Weanling Sale draft by the Dayes family for what might prove a bargain $13,000. He is a half-brother to multiple winner Valley Prince (Dissident) and their dam Vintage Valley (Denman) is out of a sister to the G2 Tatt’s Winter S. winner La Sizeranne (NZ) (Stravinsky {USA}) and the family of the G1 Australian Derby winner Tavago (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}).
Terang, Race 1, 1pm AEST, Terang Co-Op 2YO, $35,000, 1000m
Alcudia (Capitalist) has an abundance of speed in her pedigree and is a half-sister to the G3 Maribyrnong Plate S. winner and G2 Blue Diamond Prelude (Fillies and Mares) runner-up Vinicunca (I Am Invincible). They are out of the winning Flying Spur mare Xandretta and she is a half-sister to the G1 Champagne S. and G3 Sweet Embrace S. winner Carry On Cutie (More Than Ready {USA}).
Capitalist, sire of Alcudia | Standing at Newgate Farm
It's the family of former Champion 2-year-old colt The Mission (Choisir), who also won an edition of the Champagne and the G3 Schweppervesence H. Trained by Tom Dabernig and Ben Hayes, Alcudia has drawn well (barrier five) and in the hands of Daniel Stackhouse looks set to make an impact on debut.
Terang, Race 3, 2.20pm AEST, Christians Buslines Plate, $35,000, 1400m
Millennium Jewel (Not A Single Doubt) gave a strong account of herself at the first time of asking at Warracknabeal when she came from back in the field over 1200 metres to finish third. The extra trip here should suit nicely and with the benefit of that raceday experience she should be a leading chance.
Millennium Jewel as a yearling
Prepared by Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr, Millennium Jewel was purchased out of Three Bridges Thoroughbreds’ draft at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale by Blueblood Thoroughbreds for $100,000. She is a half-sister to a pair of winners and their dam is the unraced Millenium Star (NZ) (Octagonal {NZ}) and the headline acts in this pedigree are the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner and sire Danske and the G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Midnight Oil (NZ) (Keeper).
