The winner of the Listed Balaklava Cup at his previous appearance, the 5-year-old covered extra ground from an awkward gate before rider Barend Vorster had him closer to the fence and within sight of the leaders.
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Winning Partner lengthened stride when asked in the straight to hit the front 200 metres out and surged clear to beat the favourite Aqueduct (NZ) (Dundeel {NZ}), who made the pace, and Regalo Di Gaetano (Supreme Class).

Winning Partner was sold by breeder Glenelg Stud at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale where McEvoy Mitchell Racing went to $110,000 to secure him.
He is a half-brother to the three-time winner Route Eighty Eight (Written Tycoon) and their dam Lady Frere (Johannesburg {USA}) won one modest event over 1400 metres.
She is a half-sister to the dual black-type winner General Peekay, also a Group 3 placegetter, with Balmoral Beau (Don’t Say Halo {USA}) another stakes winner within the first two generations of the pedigree.
