Black type preview: The Valley

The Valley, G1 Charter Keck Cramer Moir S., $1,000,000, 1000m

It’s been a fruitful spring so far for the South Australians and Bella Vella (Commands) could add to that even further if she can take out her second Group 1 on Friday night. The 6-year-old mare, who is trained by Will Clarken, has had four starts at The Valley for three wins and one second and was impressive when winning the G2 McEwen S. over the course first-up.

West Australian raider Fabergino (Maschino) has won her last four starts and has an overall record of nine wins and two placings from 12 starts. She has never raced in Group 1 company, nor has she been to The Valley, but we have seen in the past that the Perth horses can mix it with Victoria’s best in these feature sprints.

Pippie (Written Tycoon) scored her maiden Group 1 win first-up in the G1 Oakleigh Plate earlier this year so we know she’s ready to go without having a run under her belt. She’s a speed horse and there are a few in this race, but having drawn barrier four, she should be able to get to the front without having to do as much work as her rivals.

Group 1 winner Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}) is back for his first run of the spring, but drawn in barrier one over 1000 metres he’ll find it tough to be able to get back and flash home like he normally does, while Diamond Effort (Mossman) is a mare in great form but this is her toughest task to date, and watch out for Jungle Edge (Dubawi {Ire}) if it rains.

The Valley, G2 E.J. Whitten Time to Test Stutt S., $200,000, 1600m

A number of horses in this race have dual-accepted for Saturday’s G2 Caulfield Guineas Prelude, but one confirmed runner is G3 Ming Dynasty winner Holyfield (I Am Invincible). This colt was mighty impressive when winning last-start with 59kgs on his back and all reports are that he has only improved since that run.

Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock) was last seen finishing third in the G1 Memsie S. against the older horses and finished second to King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice) at his only previous start at 1600 metres.

Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) is one that has accepted for the Guineas Prelude but trainer Patrick Payne has said this race is his likely aim. The 3-year-old gelding is on a path to the G1 VRC Derby but was very impressive when running on late to finish third in the Listed Exford Plate at his first-up run.

The Valley, G2 Four’N Twenty Stocks S., $200,000, 1600m

After two unplaced runs in Group 1s to kick off the spring, Mystic Journey (Needs Further) has dropped down to a slightly easier race to try and return to the winners' stall for the first time in over a year. She has won over this course before and she doesn’t have to give up any weight to her rivals.

Mystic Journey winning at Moonee Valley

Perfect Jewel (Redoute’s Choice) was impressive when winning the G3 Cockram S. two starts ago and followed it up with a solid performance in the G1 Makybe Diva S. at Flemington on September 12. She has never raced at The Valley but with rain forecast to hit Melbourne on Friday, her ability to handle soft and heavy ground is a big plus.

The ever-consistent Greysful Glamour (Stratum) can never be ruled out. She is a winner at The Valley and was only 1.1l behind Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) and subsequent G1 George Main S. winner Kolding (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) in the G2 Tramway S.

The Valley, G3 Piper-Heidsieck Scarborough S., $160,000, 1200m

September Run (Exceed And Excel) and Swats That (Shamus Award) are set for a rematch from their run in the Listed Cap D’antibes S. over 1100 metres last-start.

September Run had the measure on Swat’s That in that race, winning by 0.75l, but the daughter of Shamus Award flashed home and arguably would have won if there were another 100 metres in the race. September Run has drawn barrier three while Swats That will jump from nine so will more than likely have to settle further back in the run, giving her rival that forward advantage again.

Dirty Thought (So You Think {NZ}) comes into the race off the back of finishing third to Night Raid (Vancouver) in the Listed Atlantic Jewel S. She also won over this track and distance two starts ago, which is invaluable form given the sometimes awkward nature of the track, but she has drawn the widest barrier in 11.

The Valley, G3 Ladbrokes JRA Cup, $200,000, 2040m

Al Galayel (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is in fine form having won his last two starts, including one at this track. He loves The Valley having won three times from six starts and also enjoys a bit of cut in the ground if the rain does come.

Last year’s G1 VRC Oaks winner Miami Bound (NZ) (Reliable Man {GB}) finished back in the field in the Makybe Diva S. last start but at her start before at The Valley, she flashed home over 1600 metres to finish fourth. She also finished fourth over this course in the G2 Alister Clark S.

This year’s G1 Australian Derby winner Quick Thinker (So You Think {NZ}) also finished down the field in the Maybe Diva and he’s got to carry the top weight, but will no doubt be better stepping up to 2040 metres.
