Looking Ahead - November 24

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Sunday, we take a closer look at the chances of a filly from the family of Group 1 winner Super Seth (Dundeel {NZ}) at Queanbeyan and at Seymour two lightly-tried maiden contenders from well-performed black type families have caught our attention.

Queanbeyan, Race 2, Jerrabomberra Hotel Golden Bullet, $25,000, 1000m

Sally Sweetness (Spirit Of Boom) has been given a couple of quiet trials leading into her debut and from a handy gate she can give a great sight under rider Winona Costin. She has a pedigree to suggest there’s every chance she can show an early return on her $160,000 purchase price at the Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Sally Sweetness is out of the unraced Flying Spur mare See No Evil, who is a daughter of the G2 Yallambee Classic winner Toast Of The Coast (Rory’s Jester). The dam is a half-sister to the mother of the G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Super Seth and the dual Listed winner Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom {USA}).

Seymour, Race 2, 1.25pm, Beraldo Coffee Maiden, $35,000, 1100m

Mississippi Flyer (Magnus) hails from a well-performed North American family and the 3-year-old has made an encouraging start to his career. He finished fifth on debut last term and was put aside after following that up with a second placing at Ballarat and since his return he’s been a winner at the Benalla trials.

The Lindsay Park representative was a $130,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale graduate and is out of South In Dixie (USA) (Dixie Union {USA}), herself a 2-year-old winner. She is a half-sister to the G3 Iowa Oaks winner Whimsy (USA) (Maria’s Mon {USA}) and to the dam of the Group 1 performer Brill (USA) (Medaglia d’Oro {USA}). Stakes winners Mindy Sue (USA) (Pleasantly Perfect {USA}) and Catch My Drift (USA) (Pioneerof The Nile {USA}) are also members of this successful family.

Early Morning Rise (NZ) (Fastnet Rock) was a NZ$225,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sale buy and is a half-sister to three winners. Their dam Kay’s Awake (NZ) (Towkay) was a talented sprinter who won six races, including the Listed Newmarket H. and emphasised her quality with four Group 1 placings. Her dam Wake Up Suzie (NZ) (Hereward The Wake {USA}) was also a black type winner.

Now trained by Danny O’Brien, Early Morning Rise will make her Australian debut here after three runs in New Zealand. She struck wet tracks in two of those appearances and a clearer indication of her ability was a placing last season on a firm surface at Te Aroha and a recent trial at Cranbourne should have her ready to make a bold first-up showing.
