Australian buyers were active during the opening session of Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale on a day of action headlined by a son of Oasis Dream (GB), who was purchased for 320,000 gns (AU$613,110).

Offered by Juddmonte Farms as Lot 289, the three-time winner Sash (GB) was bought by regular visitor Tim Cohen, of Red Baron’s Farm, with Rancho Temescal.

"We had a bit of break due to market forces and we were buying in South America, but we've been coming back for the last five years," Cohen said.

"He is a lovely physical – and you have to pay to get quality. It is more than I wanted to spend, but I didn't want to let him go either.

"This horse likes firm ground which is important going to California and he still gets all the conditions so he will fit into the program."

Sash is out of Surcingle (USA) (Empire Maker {USA}) and is from the family of the broodmare gem Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}), dam of five Group 1 winners and the leading sire Dansili (Ire).

Three for Waller

Chris Waller’s agent Guy Mulcaster was busy on behalf of the champion trainer and went to 280,000 gns (AU$534,800) for Surrey Thunder (Fr) (Le Havre {Fr}), Lot 237, who was sold by Surrey Racing, a syndicate run by Clive Hadingham and Steve Grubb.

A Listed winner, Surrey Thunder has been placed twice at Group 3 level and was fifth in the G1 German Derby.

"Our prizemoney keeps going up so we keep coming back,” Mulcaster said. "He is a lovely style of a horse, looked well and has not been over-raced.

“Horses of his ability are difficult to get. We'll get him into the system at home and see where he fits in.”

The colt is a son of Zakania (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and his pedigree page boasts the presence of the former champion 2 and 3-year-old Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar {USA}), who won five times at Group 1 level.

Mulcaster also ticked off Lot 297 from his shopping list, a 260,000 gns (AU$496,660) purchase from Juddmonte’s draft.
