Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
On Tuesday, we concentrate our efforts on Hawkesbury where we like the chances of a 3-year-old with an internationally-successful pedigree and two youngsters on debut who hail from impressive families.
Hawkesbury Race 1, 12.50pm, Blake’s Marine Maiden H., $35,000, 1100m
Philanthropist (Uncle Mo {USA}) boasts a long and deep pedigree which features domestic and international top-flight winners. He is out of Aphrodite (Dehere {USA}), who is from the family of the G1 Coolmore Classic winner Alverta (Flying Spur) and the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke S,. winner Trust In A Gust (Keep The Faith). Overseas stars in the pedigree include the two-time G1 Dubai Wolrd Cup winner Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet), G1 Golden Jubilee S. winner Art Connoisseur (Ire) (Lucky Story {USA}) and the former champion European filly and multiple Group 1 winner Balanchine (USA) (Storm Bird {CAN}).
Trained by Gwenda Markwell, Philanthropist finished third in his spring debut and was then spelled after finishing unplaced from an outside gate on a heavy track at Kembla Grange. The 3-year-old finished runner-up in a recent trial to emphasise his readiness to resume.
Hawkesbury Race 2, 1.25pm, XXXX Gold Maiden, $35,000, 1100m
New Group 1 jockey Jason Collett will partner Olorin (Lonhro) and the well-related 3-year-old suggested a bold first-up performance was on the cards following a runner-up finish in his only trial at Rosehill. He should get every opportunity to impress from a handy gate.
Trained by James Cummings, Olorin is a three-quarter brother to the Group 2 winners Renaissance and Sessions and a half-brother to the G3 Eclipse S. winner Whiskey Neat (Denman). The dam is out of Ouija (Viscount), who is a half-sister to the G1 Flight S. winner Unworldly (Quest For Fame {GB}) and the G2 Shannon H. winner Gordo (Brief Truce {USA}).
Hawkesbury Race 3, 2.05pm, Hawkesbury Gazette 2YO, $35,000, 1300m
Tasteful (Redoute’s Choice) has been given a couple of quiet trials this month by trainer Paul Messara to have her ready to go. She has a speedy pedigree and will get her chance from an inside gate to show she has inherited a share of the family ability.
The 2-year-old is a sister to the G3 Widden S. winner Honesty Prevails, a $720,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, and is out of the dual sprint winner Flavoured (Hussonet {USA}). She is a sister to the stakes winner Ego’s Dare and the second dam is a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winners and producers AP Indy (USA) (Seattle Slew {USA}) and Summer Squall (USA) (Storm Bird {CAN}).
